Isn’t it weird that if you kill the parent that the child becomes the zombie?
To be fair, child becomes an orphan first, but orphans turn into zombies after death and start searching for their parents.

Reboot already has a grim dark season where Bob dies and Enzo becomes more scruffy. Yes, it’s still ultimately a kids show, but it is much more dark comparatively.
