Loved them at first, but they fully enshitified after OPPO. They were also on my blocklist for future purchases after claiming my trade in was damaged presenting pictures with no damage.
I was considering OnePlus 15R, what is the problem with the brand?
In the early days they were everything I wanted in an Android device. Hardware sold with minimal markup, long battery life, and easily customizable when it came to the swapping ROM’s. Their customer service was also fantastic.
Then they slowly raised margins and the hardware wasn’t cheaper than other flagships. Then they started making their own ROM and making it harder to swap it out. Now they’re just another Android. Nothing sets them apart from pretty much any other device.
On top of that, their customer service is now on the deny delay defend flow. If you have a problem and you need their support, you will regret going with them. If you don’t have a problem, you’ll probably be fine. But why go with them at all, nothing they offer is better than a Samsung or LG.
Sad to see this really. I don’t think I would ever switch back to Android now that bootloaders are locked down. I am sure they will find away to take away APKs in the US. I loved being able to swap out ROMs as needed and try new things.
Pixel has turned into blatant spyware and AI machine. I just can’t get behind the all AI future that Google is going towards.
I haven’t kept up on what’d been happening with OnePlus so this blindsided me. It sucks. I love my OnePlus 12. It runs as good as the day I bought it. I’ve never had a phone with the lifespan the battery has had. Bummer.
There were rumors about this for a few months, so not a surprise. Still, sad how they managed to kill the brand. I’m still using OP6 with original battery that starts to show it’s age, and trying to find a decent replacement device is a challenge.
How was Ubuntu able to launch like a dozen of phones back in the day?

Yes. I can agree buuuut just buy the model from 2 years ago (assuming a new model every year) for >50% off, swap the battery and your somewhat good with an acceptable phone.
They don’t hold the value as an iphone so this isnt too far off.
But if you buy the previous model right after the launch of a new one for 20-25% off then yes, you are fueling the used-market prices.Example:
The canon 90d was selling with a kit lense for about 900-1000€ in a very good condition.
I filtered sales on ebay and made myself clear to buy it for 100€ or less.
A few weeks later I scored the sale for 800€ with 2 batteries and the whole packaging. Body was also only lightly used and a bit of dust specks inside the lense.
You can make good deals if you want to. Mindlessly consuming will result in what you describe.Personally I would swap the battery in my phone if the storage wasnt a bit small for me.
And if I get myself a 256gb model next time I might have enough for the next time my battery has only 80% leftover capacity and I will attempt the swap instead.
I will also avoid getting a Samsung (bloatware), OnePlus (exited EU market. Had bad experiences with their OS flavor), Sony (tempting but way too expensive) and Apple (Is on my blacklist for the walled garden).
Googles phone are still affordable enough and has acceptable photography quality on par with Samsung, Sony and Apple.So what else can you recommend me?

i have two oneplus 6 phones right now, and two more that are broken. One working one has android, the other will get lineageos. when lineage is stable might migrate the android one to nixos. Nixos is pretty obscure but it helps to have people banging on distros and filing bugs.

Yeah, I had multiple one+ phones for years. The last one I got was literally unusable after the first update and customer services was non existent.

I guess they made decent phones so that oppo had a foothold in western markets, but they got their asses handed to them by xiaomi. The moment xiaomi established themselves I swear oppo started phasing out oneplus. This has been a long time coming.

Still have a oneplus, the 9pro. Still a great phone, but I know that newer models are pretty shit. So this would be my last oneplus anyway (after having owned 3). Next phone would be a de-googled android or a Linux phone. I’m thinking of Fairphone. But right now my 9pro is still good and AI free so I don’t need anything else.
I have a OnePlus 13 and have been largely very happy with it. I just don’t care much for Google’s and Samsung’s skins. I’m hoping my next phone is a Nothing, but they haven’t been exactly hitting home runs recently. What other non-google/Samsung phones are even around these days?
Commedore is back in business, bringing a Linux flip phone on the market. In the root it’s blocking social media and browsers. Also about 90% of android apps will work on it. It’s tempting, but I don’t want to type out messages with an old school numerical keyboard. Also I want a browser on my phone.
Fairphone has a nice business model. Fair product which has been produced fairly from fairly sourced materials. Price is steap but it’s repairable and upgradable and it’s OS is de-googled android. The hardware just isn’t flagship level. There are more businesses who focus on anti Google. But most of it is still android and lack behind on some level.
But with the recent exponentially growing evilness of Google I assume Linux phone development will have a nice boost.

but it has good support for degoogled roms, even eelockable bootloader for safety with supported roms.
In Europe, maybe. I fully expect the remaining three carriers in the USA (Dish doesn’t count, sorry) to start “locking down” their networks again just like they used to, preventing “unauthorized” devices from connecting. It’s why they’re pushing for eSIM-only devices, so you can’t move your SIM around without their okay (and likely a fee).
Still use my 5T. Absolute tank of a phone. Considering replacing the battery and charging/aux port to refresh it for another 4 year run.

The screen on my 6T broke and it was 500 dollars to fix it. Also their pricing is no longer worth it.

I got a guy to fix my phone screen. Overall cost was less than $100, the replacement screen was like $50 from China.
I once got a screen replaced by a street vendor in shenzhen for $5 but then it cracked on the way to the hotel (just the glass put on the LCD with thin strips of vhb on the side)
I did that too and screen didn’t even last 6 months. That’s the problem with cheap screens. You don’t get much out of them.
Mine didn’t even last 2 months under a screen protector. I didn’t even get a cheap price on a cheap screen. I got rid of the phone since it cost too much to replace. They said it wasnt a common part, if it had been a Samsung or iPhone it would have been closer to 50 to replace.
Was very happy with my 1+1. But sadly all downhill from there.
I loved my OnePlus 3 so much, only stopped using it in like, 2021 because the screen started to lift in one corner. Replaced it with an Oppo brand that was kinda crap from day 1. Only bought it because it was one of the few phones with a headphone jack.
I would say even up to the 7, they were still somewhat on brand of being enthusiast friendly

Probably not, but for me 1+ was always more about good feature sets and being open to tinkering.

I was recently shopping for a phone too, OP15 was a contender. Originally wanted to grab the OP12 for it’s camera and price but I missed the train. OP15 was tempting but expensive so I held off. Samsung Ultra are all overpriced and stagnated.
I eventually gave up on my hard requirements of 512GB storage and better battery life and bought a used Samsung Ultra for 800 CAD. Battery is disappointing as expected, but it does everything just as good as a new Ultra seeing as they haven’t updated any specs outside CPU power in 5 years.
Am I happy with the market state? No. Am I happy with the phone? Yes.
From someone who has the OP15. It’s a great device if you like to tinker and install degoogled version. Even using lineage or other roms with gapps, we have wallet working with full play certification. And the dev community is active around it. So I still recommend it. Just note the camera is acceptable for the tier, just not great. The battery/performance on the other hand is fantastic.

Nothing Phones seem promising. Although their models make no sense. They have main phones, mid phones, budget phones, and then a whole sub brand called cmf that has ITS OWN phone hierarchy.
At the very least they are different and trying new things.
I do a Motorola with LineageOS. I’ll probably upgrade to a new Motorola when they are compatible with Graphene
When is that gonna come out?
They announced it back in March, and there’s no date yet. We just have “as soon as 2027”
