What I hate is the cane prevents me from going out into the places where the wild things are. It will end my ability to forage wild mushrooms and berries in the clear cuts. Nor hunt the ruffed grouse in the aspen thickets in the forests I live in or chase pheasants across the prairies with my dogs. No more climbing ladders to fix my home or do a brake job on my car.

Every time I need that cane, it limits my freedom and the things I can do. I do not suffer limitations very well.

As much as I hate my cane and what it represents to me, I hate using crutches and walkers even more. I’ve had to use both of these over the last years also.

Yep. My bidet in the master bathroom automatically opens and closes but we do have a soft close in the secondary. So nice.

I do have the problem now that when I use someone else’s bathroom, I either leave it open because mine closes itself, or I just tap it to close because of the soft close one at home so it slams closed.

It’s embarrassing sometimes.

I just hung mine back in the closet yesterday. And hopefully I won’t need it again for another 4 or 5 years.

At some point you will probably want to buy one. I grew up on a farm and did do farming myself as a secondary job.

As cool as a new tractor looks, try to avoid buying one. Tractors do not make money, but they do cost money to own. Tractors can last bloody near for ever if you want them to and they can still do the work.

My very first tractor was a 1941 Farmall H. I got it from a great uncle who had taken it all apart. I mean, the head, pistons, and con rods were all laying in his junk pile for a couple years. The exposed block was was open to the elements. I scrounged up all the parts from the pile and loaded everything up and hauled it home. A new set of sleeves and bearings, gaskets, and a valve job later, I had a tractor that I used as a utility tractor around the farm for 30 more years. I added a $150 worth of Stanhoist loader that needed some heat and beat plus welding at an auction and it was the most used tractor I ever owned. I sold it to a nephew a couple of years ago. He gave it a new paint job and decals and the old girl is still the belle of the ball.

Having used an open station tractor and mounted snow blower at -20F for years, I do not recommend it. I much prefer my heated cab in old age dotage. Ain’t nothing like blowing snow in your shirt sleeves and slippers.

As soon as my knee heals up better, I need to clean up wind damage from July yet. Plus I have 5 I need to fall before they become a real pain in the butt and threaten the house. So, my tractor and skidsteer and gator will get a workout then. And when that’s done, I need to fix the left hand HVAC blower motor to get ready for winter.

I’m hoping for next month.

Don’t forget the flexi-snakes. So many flexi-snakes. Fidget toys still seem pretty popular after all these years too.

Since I’ve been Windows free for several decades now, I will hard agree with you that running your favorite distro is the Way^tm But I like I said, I’m under no illusions that my old hardware has a life span. Like me, someday it’s going to die and not even running Arch can fix it. And if there are no old affordable parts or whole computers, what then?

That’s the kind of bridge you need to plan on crossing long before you get there.

It’s like driving a big truck. You get to the bridge and the sign says 5 ton(ne) weight limit and you’re driving a 40 ton(ne) truck. And there is a line of cars behind you that stretches to the horizon. You can’t turn around now. What are you going to do?

Old hardware is old. It will die eventually, and at some point there will be no more old hardware. Then what?

Green beans are very prolific. It’s a good thing I really enjoy them. And I like yellow wax beans best. I haven’t made pickled green beans in a long time.

Look at the long game. Installing a Linux distro is great. But what happens when your GPU/CPU/SSD dies and you can’t afford or buy replacements?

They got more time and can afford to wait us out.

You got this. Dishwashers a pretty simple machines. And once you pull it out from under the countertop, there ain’t no pesky sheetmetal to deal with. Everything is out in the open.
