See my reply to the other comment under mine. Though I’ll add I feel like I “got started” when I met a bunch of local amateur radio operators and we all got chatting about long distance, wireless data transfers, which would add a lot of resilience to a mesh system.

I’ve “started” but only so far as working on my home lab/server and home network. In theory if I get everything setup in advance, it’s as simple as getting some high gain WiFi antennas and getting other people to put their routers in bridge mode and configuring them to extend my network.

That being said, I am building out my home server with this goal in mind. An effective mesh network will have multiple devices hosting redundant instances of all the services, and the more devices doing that the more resilient the network is. To that end I’ve taken to learning NixOS for the reproducibility. Because your system is declared in a single file, and hardware specific config is separated from that, I can turn any device into a node in the mesh simply by installing NixOS and pulling the config of an existing node.

Eventually I’d love to basically build my own routers from single board computers and high gain antennas that I can just give to people. Basically a plug and play, preconfigured device that will pickup the existing mesh, or create a new origin node if not in range.

The super long term dream or goal of this would be to include a very long range, slower connection between origins to trickle feed content changes. Depending on the dystopia we end up in, this could be done with crazy strong WiFi signals, radio, LoRa, or even (inspired by factorial logistics robots) gliders or drones that are themselves carrying mesh network nodes and fly over bubbles of mesh networks.

It’s all kind of a pipe dream, but I’m at least educating myself for a time where more people begin to realize the World Wide Web as we know it is crumbling.

Exactly the opposite in fact. I aspire to host the exit node! I’d love for my whole neighborhood to mesh our networks together and form an Intranet of self hosted services. It’s a massive uphill battle in suburbia, but I have high hopes for similar projects in my local city proper.

Yeah fair, though I do know of a lot of affinity groups already planning to come up from DC. There’s even fairly easy transit options. But I do agree with spoiling his footage. If he wants to issue the order to suppress protestors at his parade with violence I just hope everyone on the ground in DC is ready for that.

What to do instead? COME TO PHILLY! No Kings, 50501, and Indivisible are organizing a march/rally/protest THIS SATURDAY as a counter to his parade. Bring lots of US flags, bring your signs, bring yourselves. If you’re a vet, make that clear with your clothes, signs, flags etc. If you’re a healthcare worker please, PLEASE, show up if able and bring a first aid kit. We are expecting 80-120k people. The street medics will have their work cut out for them even if it stays totally peaceful. Should things be escalated in any way we will need the extra medical knowledge. Bring water, for yourself and to share if you’re able to carry the extra.

Mask, bring eye protection (safety glasses for blunt impact, lab goggles or similar should teargas get deployed), bring a respirator, cover tattoos. Have an exit and arrest plan in place. If you can, buy a cheap phone, DO NOT turn it on near your house, and DO NOT put a SIM card in it. Phones without SIMs can still call 911 and take photos/videos.

I use Finamp with my Jellyfin library for simplicity’s sake. Other things probably have better UI and such, but it’s nice to just dump all my media in my Jellyfin folders and move on.

I agree about the readability. I think the circle under Searxng and Metager is to specify they are aggregators that base their results on those that existing engines would produce. It’s very hard to see, but the other circle you mentioned is a REALLY little EU flag. I think that means hosted/owned by an EU company.

Imagine if all the space between the primary radial arms of trains was filled in with street cars and pedestrian/micromobility centric spaces. Like the problem you are saying cars solve just doesn’t exist in the first place and people can still get around very easily. Even more rural folks can simply drive to the edge of this style of urban design if they need access to something. The reason bus rides are 45 minutes is because of the number of cars they have to put up with. The density of people that can be moved with shockingly good area coverage if cars are not a factor is incredible.

You could maybe setup a SMB share targeting your download location, mount that on the computer you’d like to install on, then point the setup.exe at the SMB share for the bin files.

I don’t really play Minecraft anymore, different block game has taken over, but I used to be big into modded Minecraft and map editing. I believe a tool called Amulet is kind of the “modern MCEdit”. Might do what you’re looking for.

I do this a lot too, and most of my friends are very understanding, which has also prompted me to get better about remembering what they were saying so I can recenter the conversation on them once my tangent is over. I had an ex (both of us non-binary) that really couldn’t get past that and see it for what my other friends do (the ‘tism) and only perceived as my (amab on feminizing hrt) talking over them (afab not on hrt) in a “domineering man” kind of way, even though they have way more traditionally masc traits then me (competitiveness, impatience, over confidence in their understanding of things to a point of stubbornness…). I really liked them and thought they understood because they’re also neurodivergent, but just couldn’t get over it or learn to work with it, or even give me the time to improve on it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I daily drive linux, but I don’t work in a field that involves computers much if at all. I’ve always tinkered with whatever OS I had installed. It was OS 9 then OSX and macOS as a kid. Then windows once I had my own computers, and now Linux. I jumped the windows ship “relatively” early. As in a good bit before copilot and such, still definitely “recent” on a broader scale. I’ve been on Linux for over a year full time.

I’m now looking into helping other people around me adopt Linux and just FOSS in general. A friend and I have talked about opening a tech repair shop that also offers custom system/home/network builds. Would love to see more Linux being used in local businesses.

I find Linux reacts better to my tinkering. Or at the very least gives me an actual error message to work with when I tinker to close to the sun. I dove right in with the Arch minimal installer, and built my system from the command line. Inevitably my first install had some jank, so I’m trying to make a more refined version in NixOS to see if I like the paradigm shift.

I’ll also toss in that it was actually Syncthing that got me into Linux and also inspired trying NixOS. I got very fed up with the clunky options for running Syncthing on windows. That among other reasons sent me to Linux, and once I started learning more the idea of using Syncthing to manage NixOS configs across all my machines started to bounce around my mind. Syncthing already kind of gives this feeling that all my devices are just one big distributed file system. Carrying that over to the actual OS completes the process of making it a completely distributed single system, simply with different interfaces for accessing it.

I use Unix Pass connected over Tailscale to a git server I host myself. The interface options for various devices are a bit clunky, but it basically “just works” outside of that.

Edit: I used to use KeePass and syncthing, which I think is probably the best (balance of simple and effective) combo for most users.

I know a bit of ASL and am learning more! That was my other thought for live captioning. I’d like to eventually get gesture based input working to, but that will be a dive into computer vision and all that. I’d still be interested in the name of that extension!!

Could I inquire what accessibility tools and software you use? I generally want to be well educated on these things, but I’ve been considering something like this for myself. Real time captioning software or something like that. I often have headphones or earplugs in for sensory reasons. Even gaming sometimes I’d prefer to not have to hear discord and still communicate with people.

Fair. I definitely did not acknowledge my own bias. There are numbers showing the growth of Linux in both gaming and general. The steam deck alone is showing many people, including hardware manufacturers, the power of linux. That is directly pushing and growing the portable gaming market, which takes market share away from Windows. This will continue to grow, and I believe negative sentiment towards the bloated experience the vast majority of users are getting with Windows is also growing. Hence the “(slowly) dying”, which was meant to be a bit tongue and cheek. I have only anecdotal evidence as far as I have seen quite a few articles about various “features” in the last month, but again within posts from my slice of the internet. One such article was about system popups basically begging you to use Edge, another this change to the keyboard, and one about ads/sponsored links all over the OS.

Obviously Windows still have a massive market share. Never said it didn’t. I just like to believe there’s some cracks showing in the armor.

The “slowly” in parenthesis and “I feel” in my final line of my original post, did not acknowledge the slice of the internet I generally consume content from, which absolutely does have some collective bias against windows.
