Trump administration says US ‘doesn’t need’ ICC after accusing court of unfairly targeting Americans for war crime charges

The United States imposed sanctions on the international criminal court (ICC), its latest escalation against an entity the Trump administration has accused of politicization and unfairly targeting Americans for war crime charges.

The ICC accused Donald Trump’s officials of attempting to “obstruct the course of justice” after “an assault” on the international legal order.

Just hours after a former ICC judge was awarded the Nobel Peace prize, Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, announced in a video that the US would move to impose financial sanctions.

Starting next April, it will be prohibited for any US citizens, companies, or organizations to conduct business with the ICC. Organizations outside the US that collaborate with the court also face the threat of sanctions.

One possible consequence is that ICC staff salaries can no longer be paid. “The ICC holds its bank account with ABN Amro,” says De Hoon. “It is highly questionable whether the bank can circumvent these sanctions.”

Once the sanctions take effect, staff members will no longer be able to use US-made software. For instance, they would be unable to send emails to one another via Microsoft, and documents—such as investigative materials—could not be stored on US servers.

Previous sanctions imposed by the US government applied only to individual prosecutors and judges; now, the court itself is being targeted as an institution. The ICC had already begun migrating its IT systems in response to those earlier sanctions, but the progress of this process remains unclear. “These systems are so complex that I wonder if it can be done by April,” says De Hoon. Then every member state of the ICC (almost the entire world) should impose sanctions on the US in return. Enough is enough.

Gee, I can’t imagine why the ICC would target so many US citizens for war crimes…

Just more naked demonstration of the need for digital sovereignty.

In payment systems, in emails, in data storage, in cloud, in desktop software, in encryption, messaging, etc. If you have a dependency with any American company, you are not sovereign.

This is not easy, but if you are not already taking steps forward you are behind.

“The ICC has never indicted or even issued an arrest warrant for a US citizen”. They have, however, issued warrants for Russian war crimes in Ukraine. All that needs to be said

Definitely not just Russians, I somehow deleted the line that listed Netanyahu also. Trump also tends to go with whoever he talked to last, so it just depends who was in his mind when he decided the ICC had to go. His memory is like a goldfish.

I don’t think Kamala would have done anything different. The US is notoriously not a signatory to the ICC and has been bending over backwards for Israel before trump came around.

You forget which side was in power when the genocide kicked into overdrive in Gaza? Both sides are literally responsible for supplying Israel with unlimited weapons.

What facts? I responded to an opinion, a bad opinion that normalizes this shit.

Remember, none of this is normal, and the corpo democrats are obsessed with maintaining norms. If that doesn’t tell you how things would be different, then you’re a lost cause.

I don’t like the corpo dems, but they are not outright fascists.

All the ICC has to do is to issue international arrest warrants, with extradition and exfiltration permit avowed, for whichever executives apply the sanctions.

I wonder what’ll happen when Trumps term ends and he tries to leave the U.S.

Unless the U.S. deal with them first.

The USA will do fuck all to reign in Trump. These fucking spineless cowards had 4 years to do something and sat on their ass. Now they continue to sit on their ass after defending their precious 2nd amendment (which was “needed to protect from government tyranny” and which killed hundreds of school children)

Don’t expect these people to actually act against evil, they are all busy trying to make enough money to buy the next bullshit they desire to fill their soulless existence
