Lemmy.world grew from around 51000 total users the moment 3rd party reddit apps started to shut down on June 30 to 71000 total users at the time of this post (July 1). That’s a 40% growth in about 12 hours!

Welcome new reddit expats!

It’s so wonderful that Reddit, by making a decision that benefits no user/mod/sub, and actively harms users/mods/subs, all in the name of corporate greed, gave Lemmy the boost it needed to become a viable alternative to Reddit.

Thank you, Spez. We couldn’t have done this without you.

Lots of us new folks around! Also great there are so many apps being developed for Lemmy. Although the web UI is also pretty good.

I am one of those people who migrated as I grew up with an internet that was full of small communities and interesting content uncontrolled by greedy corporations. When I found Reddit back in 2012, I thought it was amazing and going to be a bastion of information for a modern internet. Well, now we know that wasn’t the case thanks to chasing the almighty dollar. Hopefully this is the point in time where we can steer this ship around and bring the control back to the users.

I share your opinion. I’m optimistic about the migrations away from twitter, reddit, and facebook. This is a great opportunity for the improvement and democratization of social networks. The more that people move to open source platforms and the more that people demand control of their data, the better!

We definitely felt the ship groaning through all this. Thankfully the Ruud-er skillfully navigated through this, and the software update on top.

    Anyways, welcome to Lemmy 17!

I peeked around a bit with Connect (android) for a while, and the things that stood out the most to me was the small size and sluggishness of the whole thing. BUT what also stuck out far more were pins of maintenance because of growth & updates of constant hard work to increase performance, and an interface that (while slightly jank) is infinitely superior to the official reddit app. It’s good to see continued growth, especially in such a welcoming community. The problems are providing to be simple growing pains and it’s great to be here.

I’m using Connect app too for now. Ateast until Sync for Lemmy is ready! Connect isn’t terrible by any means. Though I haven’t received a reply or DM yet so I’m not sure if background updates are working.

Fyi the sluggishness is because you’ve signed up on lemmy.world, smaller instances don’t have this scaling issue :)

Can confirm. Lemmy.world communities work perfectly from other instances. The one I’m on was setup to be scalable and very quick.

Hi, my name is power2bill. Feels odd to not have RIF on my phone. I’m going to lurk for awhile and make a comment every 2-3 months. Hopefully, new communities pop up that I used to go on from reddit. I’ll be here enjoying usefully, and sometimes not useful information. Cheers everyone! 🍻

I’m finding that quite a lot of communities exist, they just take more work at the moment. For me, I’ve found a uk community but cannot post due to signing up to .world. creating an extra account doesn’t send the verification email. I see all this of teething problems tho as was always the case with reddit.

I’m sorry to hear that losing Boost has been hard! I agree that it’s more like a vacation, or possibly even an upgrade. Think bout the fact that reddit wasn’t adding features for the benefit of users, it was focused on padding its bottom-line. This meant that features on clients like Boost were often limited. For example, Boost didn’t have reddit chat or gifs in comments, probably because the API didn’t allow for it.

On the other hand, lemmy and fediverse users are driven entirely by the goal of making amazing things for the community. Clients and apps are first-class citizens, so features will roll out to all of them pretty steadily. I expect Boost for lemmy will be way better than Boost for reddit ever was.

No, federation means we all see the same content regardless of which site we sign up on with the exception of sites that yours may block.

But be wary that lemmy.ml is a tankie instance and the “.ml” stands for Marxism-Leninism. I generally avoid lemmy.ml communities so I don’t get banned for saying “the uyghur genocide is a real thing” or anything.

No worries, .ml is in fact the official domain of the state of Mali. It’s just the interpretation of this single domain owner what he wants to stand “ml” for.

Almost every leftist space on Reddit was infected by tankies, hopefully they just stick to themselves (doubt).

Lemmy and Kbin are open source software, and anyone can host their own server. Same with Mastodon.

And the servers all* communicate with each other, so you can see content from one server while logged into another (the URL format would just be slightly different.)

            * Well, except for the cases where a server admin decides to defederate from another server for one reason or another.

They are federated instances. Lemmy is part of the Fediverse, which means distributed servers running the same service (or services) and registering in one instance gives you access to information on the other servers running Lemmy. You can have different communities (‘subreddits’) in different servers but they are all accessible and joinable. This way is not a centralised system.

The Fediverse is not just Lemmy, can be other services like Mastodon, etc.

The large instances usually subscribe to most of the others but not every instance is equal. You should go to other instances (you don’t have to join) and check their “all” feeds. You’ll definitely see differences.

There are just certain instances that I wouldn’t want to see, like foreign language ones?

New to the fediverse, so perhaps I’m not thinking about this correctly, but if could blacklist a whole instance, rather than certain magazines/subs/whatever they are called, it would be easier than playing a game of wack-a-mole.
