When I was in junior high they decided we weren’t reading enough. So for 40 minutes or so after lunch we had a reading period where everyone just read novels. Might be a good idea again.

All of the schools around where I live had SSR (Sustained Silent Reading). It’s pretty beneficial for students. You always get the morons who do everything they can to not read, but it helps most other people.

Honestly, it’s is a good argument in favor of letting kids become bored. Being bored used to be a universal experience before we had pocket screens everywhere. It gave us the opportunities to explore reading, creativity, and the world around us. Putting screens in kids’ faces at every potentially-boring moment in life deprives them of that, and trains them to consume entertainment instead of creating their own.

I cherished sitting quietly in the back seat of the car on long rides. I loved the peace and the changing scenery, it’d let my mind wander. I’d ponder questions, come up with stories, and analyze my emotions and experiences to better understand myself. It’s scary to think that the future generations will be practically born carrying tablets, and as such will rarely, if ever, have experiences like we did to sit in peace and find comfort in it.

Idk i always hated being bored. I just always always had a book with me. If I was near the end of a book, I had to carry two so there would be no gaps. I don’t think my books were superior to carrying a screen. I still have a book in my purse anytime I go anywhere. I absolutely loathe sitting still doing nothing. Maybe it’s the depression. Idk.

when i was in school, we called it the USSR period. Uninterrupted silent substantial reading. we’d literally just read whatever we felt like for an hour.

We got a free pizza coupon for reading 5 books, and a pizza party for every class that read like 100 books or something.

So really, the problem is that pizza is either garbage or too expensive, and therefore no longer a viable motivator.
