  • I watched a kid nearly drown in waist deep water. To this day I have no idea what happened, but it looked like he was floating, then flopping around playfully, then going back to floating. I was standing on the shore just getting my feet wet (this was a “beach” outside Toronto) and I was just kind of watching him because his behavior seemed off somehow. After one of his “flops” he started a face down float, which he’s done a few times, but this time it kept going.

I had been counting in my head without even realizing it and we were up to about 60s when I started looking around. Had anyone else noticed? His mom came over and started calling to him. Ok, she’s in control. Another 30s pass and his mother is getting panicked. Fuck, I’m fully clothed, an hour from home, should I dive in? Something is definitely wrong. Someone do something… I turn around and start yelling as well.

Finally someone drags him, limp, from barely 3 feet of water. WTF. People are giving him CPR and I check his pulse between breaths… Fuck. I can’t find a pulse. Then he rockets a half gallon of water from his lungs and sits up. Finally some lifeguards show up.

I’d completely froze in the moment. I sensed something was off and didn’t do anything. Thank God the kid survived, but I think about it way too much…

  • 75g into the French press, fill with room temp water, let it sit over night. Cold brew is great for getting a stronger cup from lighter roasts because it’s nearly impossible to over-extract, allowing much higher ratios. You lose some bitterness, but you get a bunch of other flavors which are hard to get from other methods, like woody and floral notes.

If I want it hot, I throw it in the microwave, and store the leftover in Tupperware for a day or two. Really it’s the perfect method because it’s all prep the night before, but doesn’t require a countertop appliance.

Bonus tip - you can eat coffee beans for a quick boost. They are quite tasty and have a satisfying crunch.

  • This is because Microsoft intentionally breaks excel and PP compatibility with Google docs in small but important ways. It’s the only thing keeping them afloat at this point. I have gotten into heated debates at work over this, because I prefer Google docs, but my boss will be like “we need to deliver this to customers who will open it in office and the formatting will break” and I’m like “that’s what a pdf is for.”

  • It wasn’t that they destroyed it, it was more that they let it bit rot. Skype was honestly never a great user experience by today’s standards. The audio was bad, the connection was very unstable over mobile networks, and push notifications for calls was hit or miss. Microsoft acquired it, slapped a Microsoft login screen on it and then basically didn’t do anything to improve it. Meanwhile, Google created and killed seventy different video calling apps, which all worked better than Skype, and Apple stuck the landing with FaceTime.

  • This has been an extremely obvious flaw in the modlog concept from the very start, and has been discussed on and off for years. IMO, it exposes a much wider issue with federated forums as currently implemented, despite the aggressive defense of some vague concept of “openness.”

Blindly casting every user and mod action out into the universe in plaintext with no recall mechanism is problematic, and it will only get more problematic as the technical prowess of the average user drops. Doxxing is just the tip of the iceberg here, and I don’t think most people appreciate just how massive the social engineering attack surface actually is. Rogue instances could silently build engagement profiles on users, and then actually serve them targeted malicious content. This could be widespread, and almost impossible to detect.

Yeah I literally never heard of this before like 2022, and basically every friend I’ve had for the better part of 30 years has been a daily user at some point. This includes dabbing, concentrates, edibles, etc. so it isn’t just a potency thing. These are people who were basically stoned every waking minute of every day in college and early careers. There’s definitely something fishy here.

Incidentally, everyone is doing fine professionally as well. Lawyers, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and so on. So even the previous propaganda of “weed makes you lazy and dumb” is BS too.
