It’s disappointing. We should be going for renewables in the long term and nuclear in the mid-term with existing plants being brought back online with appropriate safety. Coal is super disappointing.
They pushed for hydrogen too and haven’t been able to make it work, they are just being contrarians at this point
im in favour of japan using nuclear tbh, small island, lots of people
nuclear better than coal imo
That’s just replacing oil dependency for uranium dependency. It doesn’t solve the core issue, which is energy security.
I don’t know what else you can do, I don’t even know if they’re capable of going full renewables, afaik similar to singapore they’re constrained by land
They have offshore wind and geothermal potential, but there seems to be little political will to get serious about it.
afaik ultimately they can’t go full renewables, they’d have to coat the island in solar panels
While Japan also imports all of its uranium, the element is plentiful worldwide and incredibly energy dense, meaning missing a few shipments won’t shock energy markets as severely.

I mean, they’re also allies with a certain someone who loves japan 😏
Australia has the world’s largest uranium resources and ranked as the world’s third largest uranium producer.

The two countries are deeply intertwined in energy. Australia provides one third of Japan’s energy supply and is the nation’s largest market for liquefied natural gas, while Japan is an important supplier of refined petroleum and diesel to Australia.
