Wider tires meant more comfortable, more capable road bikes.
The push for speed and efficiency on bicycles over comfort has been just awful for widespread bike usage. I’m an avid bicycle commuter but I’ve never wanted the super thin road tires. I’ll take comfort and ease of use.

If you really want to be comfortable, get a recumbent. ;)
Citation very much needed. Most newbies agree with you, hence the gradual fattening of bike tires. (I see an obviously parallel with SUVS.)
