witty_username@feddit.nlto Today I Learned (TIL)@lemmit.online•TIL the lyrics of Duel of Fates (the music written by John Williams for the duel between Darth Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan) are a Sanskrit translation of a thousand year old Welsh poem, Cad Goddeu, ...1·3 days agoKind of not really though:
“So yes, technically the lyrics originated in an old Welsh poem about an army of mobile trees. However, the poem has gone through quite a journey to get here. A broad translation into English, a sketchy pseudo-translation into Sanskrit, and then even further modifications to make the words more pronouncable and aesthetic, as well as robbing it of what little original meaning still remained. So basically, it doesn’t really mean anything except for a lot of the word “dreadful”, but it’s interesting to think about where the words came from.”

Also, people are worried about socioeconomic factors involved in plasma donation and euthanasia. As they should be. These are always important to be aware of and to actively try to preempt.
These things don’t absolve the retracted papers from criticism. Nor do they exclude any other research from close scrutiny

witty_username@feddit.nlto Science@mander.xyz•Scientists Just Discovered a New Type of Magnetism18·1 year agoAbstract: Magnetic properties of materials ranging from conventional ferromagnetic metals to strongly correlated materials such as cuprates originate from Coulomb exchange interactions. The existence of alternate mechanisms for magnetism that could naturally facilitate electrical control has been discussed theoretically, but an experimental demonstration in an extended system has been missing. Here we investigate MoSe2/WS2 van der Waals heterostructures in the vicinity of Mott insulator states of electrons forming a frustrated triangular lattice and observe direct evidence of magnetic correlations originating from a kinetic mechanism. By directly measuring electronic magnetization through the strength of the polarization-selective attractive polaron resonance, we find that when the Mott state is electron-doped, the system exhibits ferromagnetic correlations in agreement with the Nagaoka mechanism.
