I actually just pulled some files off of one from 2004-ish. No issues. Found another one from 2008 about a year ago that had no issues as well. Not sure why… maybe because they were so much lower capacity? Like, one was 64MB and that was huge back then.

First off, I’m not here to defend anyone. Biden and the Democrats should have been further left, and told our supposed ally to pound sand when they wanted bombs for Gaza. But they are an ally, and these deals came from Congress, so the democrats have basically zero say in what actually happens there because the republicans hold enough power there to make it so.

Thirdly, it doesn’t really matter. If you have the choice between “we’re going to let them bomb the shit out of them” and “were probably going to let them bomb the shit out of them” you don’t really get a choice on that front. You can NEVER truly be a single issue voter anyway in the US, so the fact that you choose who you didn’t means you liked the rest of Trump’s Project 2025 platform as well. You choose who’s more closely aligned with what you think is best and then you petition your congressional representative with your position. And I know we’re all looking forward to see just how far down economic security can go.

I completely agree, but every week or two is too long. At one point we had ours running builds + automated regression testing => release twice or more a day. Along with automatic change logs and monitoring, It was so nice. Tiny updates are always better to test and know exactly what/where/how a failure or positive change occurs when the cadence is that fast. The devs loved it, the QA loved it, and as a DevOps, I loved it. We were even able to do AB testing and rolling updates.

It only got worse when management changed hands and some people decided on going agile in a “Scrum-but” method and it’s been a drag that sprints are 3 weeks long. Now releases take longer, have larger impact for better or worse, and regression testing is much more complex and I have to be more involved in releasing new code. The faster cadence meant it happened so often it was fully automated and I didn’t even know when most went out unless I was watching a dashboard.

Honestly, if I were TikTok and saw this, I’d just shut off all US access to TikTok, make it clear the Tarrifs and Trump are the reason, and watch gleefully as a good % of the US that use it start revolting against Trump.

I used to use Twitter as a way of directly following a few sources of news. Follow NPR, BBS, Reuters, Etc. I don’t know anyone who expected to learn of news from “the algorithm”. That’s still true today. Expect to get fed news from whatever is trending and you’ll be bamboozled, fed useless stories a day propaganda.

Some of these sources can instead be snagged from RSS feeds and Mastodon and besides official apps, those are much better ways to follow news and always have been.

It’s also partially because any decent engineer/technocrat both lacks sufficient charisma and cash flow, and more importantly looks at public service and says “there’s no reliable way I can keep my morals and make a difference there.” As an engineer myself, I can’t imagine dealing with the general public. Choosing the correct, logical path will never win over people who put opinions and faith/feelings over reasoning and science. We’ve seen it time and time again and I’m not going to bang my head against that wall.

Instead I help friends and family, contribute to open source and projects I believe in and be the change I want to see in the world. Trying to do that as an elected official would foster insanity and pushback from those who don’t care and only want their side to win, regardless of the overall outcome.

Also: yes SJ was a POS, but he was a POS with charisma, a plan, and smart enough to surround himself with people who could make his ideas happen… and then micromanage them.

I think it’s important to say that while history and routine are part of it, social networks are only as useful as they are populated. If your friends and people you follow are all on Twitter, you’re not going to jump to Mastodon. If the content creators start switching, people will likely follow… but they won’t switch unless their followers switch.

I switched to Mastodon when Twitter went to X, and cold Turkey dropped to Lemmy from Reddit when the API scandal hit and the only thing I miss is most of the reason I was in those platforms in the first place, the content creators.
