Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Thoughts on the recent Swiss law that might require ProtonVPN to start blocking certain domains?English
5·7 months agoYeah. The word really just breaks down to, “having been noticed widely.”
Mainer here. Its great, except that the governor’s race is specifically exempted from RCV. May have something to do with GOP former governor LePage, but can’t recall before my morning meds…

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•TrueNAS Scale, hard disks, and poolsEnglish
5·7 months agoHave been using TrueNAS for 13+ years since the FreeNAS 9.x days. Can attest to its bulletproof-ness in my case.
Would second asking in the iX forums. I’ve managed to get replication help directly from iX staff before when using the forum. You shouldn’t have this issue, and you will find answers.
I’ve moved my disks to a completely new machine with fresh install and then import my config, reboot and everything is as it was. I’ve also done the same without my config and imported the pool with no problems, just need to recreate shares, and any jails (a feature which I no longer use) would need to be reconfigured to be 100% functional.

8·2 years agoMy GF would definitely disagree with you there. On my worst days, she stuffs her face into my pits and is practically intoxicated by it. Turns her on.
Sidenote: my pet cat (female) also goes nuts for it. She’ll root her nose into my pits and get all lovey. If she finds a soiled shirt out of the basket, she goes crazy, and her brother had better steer clear when she’s “high on pits.”
ETA: I agree with you, however

Technology@lemmy.world•Google is removing third-party apps and clock faces from all Fitbit watches in the EUEnglish
2·2 years agoI owned four Fitbit devices, and they all broke in some way. The clip broke at the middle joint. Everything else always was at the wristband to body joint, and they refused to make standard wristbands. I’ve had a Vivoactive 3 since 2018-ish, and it still works for me, plus I can have custom activities, and watch faces, and data screens. I like that my partner’s Garmin and mine use the same charging cable, too.
Disclaimer: I don’t use the smart watch features, like texts or calls or notifications of any kind on my tracker, and the battery lasts about five days still, unless I use GPS.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google is removing third-party apps and clock faces from all Fitbit watches in the EUEnglish
241·2 years agoGarmin has so many different trackers for different niches. Scuba, hikers, bikers, runners, pilots…
I switched after getting my third Fitbit replacement under warranty. Affordable and standard watch band parts, though some high-end trackers are a bit pricey for me.
Just no reason to stay with Fitbit with Google’s history of product longevity and support.

232·2 years agoLooks to me like you got (temp) banned for posting apparent incel comments in a hateful way. Not to mention your advice was exactly what the OP said they were avoiding from their own friends.
Perhaps reading the room is a good start before you click reply. Doubling down when called out for hateful comments will rarely go well, and defaulting to name calling and reducing well-received advice to a “lib salad” (whatever that means) won’t either. Perhaps stop behaving like the internet is some place where manners and respect are optional, and you’ll feel more welcome wherever you go.
I’m not trying to call you out or rehash that relationship advice here, only pointing out that you can disagree with people politely if you truly do desire respectful discourse. I hope you reflect on the ban and the comments replied to you. The world needs fewer, not more hateful incels or “alpha males.”

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Indeed and other job sites are saturated with scamsEnglish
10·2 years agoMy SO was skeptical from the start, but when they sent an email from an impressively obfuscated email address, that was the end. The alias had over 100 characters including specials, and the domain was the same.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Indeed and other job sites are saturated with scamsEnglish
36·2 years agoMy SO got a “job offer” from a nonexistent company that 20 min of research uncovered a single applicant being scammed out of $75k when they shared bank details, presumably for setting up direct deposit.
The “company” didn’t even have a website, but just because they were lazy doesn’t mean other scammers won’t go the extra mile to make a real-looking website with postings. Its a tough world out there…

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Indeed and other job sites are saturated with scamsEnglish
6·2 years agoThis sounds like a good option, although for job seekers looking for remote work, they might assume they are missing out by looking only in a single state.
Just being aware that employers like “Global Consulting” might not be real, and their HR rep is actually hoping to scam you is half the battle. The work that goes into finding work is increasing…
Kitboga on YouTube
Kitboga posts on YT, but he’s based on Twitch, where he goes live almost daily.
This comment seems to be the first reply. I don’t get a “just for argument sake” or a combative vibe from it, nor does it mention mythology or religion. A later comment does call the source for anecdotal (and provably false) information “idiots,” which is unnecessary and likely grounds for mod action or warning.
I don’t really read anything wrong with the mod saying to keep it clean, though the thinly-veiled threat of, “I’m a mod here and I’m not afraid to ban you,” is poorly worded at best.
I completely agree with you about politeness. At the end of the day, I think that, judging methods alone, OP was out of line with his comments about the mods friends, but correct to point out bunk facts.
If I was OP, I’d probably edit my comments to remove the name-calling, but as a Lemmy user, I want these discussions to take place to provide fact-checking for hearsay and debunked science. Politely, whenever possible.

Technology@lemmy.world•Proton Mail founder vows to fight Australia’s eSafety regulator in court rather than spy on users | Australia news | The GuardianEnglish
26·2 years agoThe eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, has proposed cloud and messaging service providers should detect and remove known child abuse material and pro-terror material “where technically feasible” – as well as disrupt and deter new material of that nature.
The eSafety regulator has stressed in an associated discussion paper it “does not advocate building in weaknesses or back doors to undermine privacy and security on end-to-end encrypted services”.
I so love these magic wand-waving legislators. “Spy on your users and control what they do on your encrypted platform, but in a way that doesn’t break encryption or violate privacy…”

I completely agree. I thought Plex would be fast in the collective rearview mirror as soon as they started forcing connections to their servers, pay-walling, etc. I also had issues with the database corrupting and causing huge slowdowns. I spent days trying and failing to preserve my ratings, watch data, etc.
In the end, I switched to a much simpler setup of an NFS/CIFS share accessed by Kodi on my Nvidia Shield TV. If Kodi chokes (happened once since 2017), I can just wipe the app and/or reinstall and then import the local metadata (XML or NFO IIRC). That takes about five minutes. It just works. Kodi also gives me access to the IAGL, so that’s a huge plus.
