I’m assuming they mean it isn’t a two way block. Blocked users can still interact with your posts/comments, you just can’t see them. I personally think that should be how it works, but I’ve seen a lot of arguments for the Reddit-style blocking where they can’t interact with you anymore.

News@lemmy.world•Woman Told FBI Trump Abused Her at 13, Epstein Files Reveal
1·4 months agoMaybe capitalism enables patriarchy through entrenched power structures propping up men, but it generally enables all kinds of cultural hierarchies as tools to keep the masses divided. Singling out any division as something that enables capitalism doesn’t make much sense.

ADHD memes@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Do you have people around you that think they have ADHD but they clearly dont, or have it at a much lower level than you?English
1·7 months agoIt’s not competing to acknowledge it affects everyone who has it to different extents. It hugely impacts my life, so it is annoying for others to downplay it or call it a “super power” because it doesn’t impact them as much. I can acknowledge their struggle, it’s not unfair to expect the same in return.

News@lemmy.world•Right-wing activist Charlie Kirk has died, says US President Donald Trump
3·9 months agoOur best hope is the GOP imploding due to the massive power vacuum Trump’s death will create. There is a lot of discontent among Republicans right now, they’re all just too afraid (or still too loyal) to Trump to oppose him directly. But Vance? He has the charisma and popularity of a wet paper towel. There will be no hesitation throwing him under the bus.

33·10 months agoAnd they are no better than answering machines for customer service. Sure, they can answer basic questions, but so can the automated phone systems.
This is what drives nuts the most about it. We had so many incredibly efficient, purpose-built tools using the same technologies (machine learning and neural networks) and we threw them away in favor of wildly inefficient, general-purpose LLMs that can’t do a single thing right. All because of marketing hype convincing billionaires they won’t need to pay people anymore.

5·10 months agoThey don’t wait long enough to have their pan heat up before they add their butter or oil.
That’s the real problem there. The oil should smoke a little when you add it, that means the pan is hot enough. You can check by flicking some water in the pan; if the water drops bead up and skate around the pan like they’re on ice (Leidenfrost effect), it’s ready. If it immediately fizzles and evaporates it’s not hot enough.

5·11 months agoThey changed the definition from types to presentations recently, because no person with ADHD is exclusively one or the other. Our presentations depend on the day and circumstances.

ADHD memes@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Anyone here "quiet" ADHD?English
13·11 months agoThat’s why they don’t use “types” anymore, they call them presentations. Any person with ADHD may present as more inattentive or more hyperactive depending on circumstances, and, like you said, some elements of both are always there.

231·1 year agoTo save you some time: Google and Meta are monitoring the conversations using the device’s microphone
This is not happening. It is not something that would be possible to hide, there are so many different places this could (and would) be detected by someone with the right know-how (data/battery consumption in particular).
Try and pay attention to how many ads you get that are completely irrelevant to you. It will happen way more often than ones that match up with your conversations.

News@lemmy.world•Troops and marines deeply troubled by LA deployment: ‘Morale is not great’
32·1 year agoLow morale/dissatisfaction =/= anger. They’re more likely to be uncomfortable and unwilling to use violence against protesters, especially since they are significantly more trained to identify threats than police are. They know these protesters are not a threat, and all their training and rules of engagement tell them to not engage.

10·1 year agoTo be fair, ADHD is a developmental disorder that sometimes can present as delayed development rather than halted development. I.e being behind in executive functioning development but eventually “catching up” to peers.
That said, the severity of cases is still often determined through the lens of “how well do they fit in/mask it” and not “how is their emotional/mental wellbeing”, which definitely gives the impression of kids “growing out of it”.

And not even death panels, just individuals who are not licensed to practice medicine who deny anyone and everyone they can make up a reason for. The merits are never considered, death is the default option.

18·1 year agoI’m sure forcing a bunch of troops to be immigration enforcement will go over well. Definitely not going to tank morale and recruitment…
The ADHD part is doing it constantly. Everyone loses stuff some times, ADHD people lose stuff all the time.
That’s the part that irks me when people pull the “oh but I do that so it’s not ADHD”. The difference isn’t if it does or doesn’t happen, it’s how often it happens and how much it impacts your day to day life.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why Balcony Solar Panels Haven’t Taken Off in the USEnglish
10·1 year agoNeither 110VAC or 240VAC is inherently more dangerous as long as the system is paired with the right gauge of wire. As for personal safety, both are more than capable of killing you regardless of amperage. 240VAC may even be a little more capable because it can push more current through the resistance of your body.
I’ll admit, American plugs/outlets leave a lot to be desired, but it’s not any more dangerous because of the higher current.
It’s a bit of both with a healthy dose of “we’re not sure”. We know that ADHD brains don’t regulate neurotransmitters properly and that the theta vs beta waves are different, but there are a lot of other mechanisms we don’t understand.
Another great example is guanfacine. It’s primarily a blood pressure medication, but it also improves emotional regulation for ADHD patients. We think it improves connections in the prefrontal cortex, but we ultimately don’t have a solid understanding of why it actually helps.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that the characters of Vasquez in Aliens (1986) and the stepmother in Terminator 2 (1991) were played by the same actor, Jenette Goldstein, apparently donning brownface for the earlier roleEnglish
5·1 year agoPutting aside the conversation about sexuality, I think viewing Vasquez as emphasis for Ripley’s femininity downplays the importance they both have. You’re totally right that Ripley shows a strong woman that embraces feminine traits, but there’s a lot to say about a character that breaks gender norms. I think the line you brought up shows that Vasquez doesn’t reject femininity outright, she just chooses to present that differently.

They’re probably only meant for rapid response situations, but Patel is using them as personal jets. He didn’t even fly back until a whole day after the shooting.
