Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about exploding head syndrome, which causes patients to hear a loud, frightening noise when falling asleep or waking up. Up to 10% of people may have it, but cases often go undiagnosedEnglish
251·2 years agoI don’t know if this qualifies, but I go on call for my job and get woken up sometimes. I use a really annoying alert tone to make sure I wake up. Unfortunately, some times when I’m not on call I hallucinate hearing that tone as I’m dozing off or in a dead sleep and it makes me shoot straight up in bed.

What Could Go Wrong@lemm.ee•Guy who tortured a wolf and paraded it's body around is now receiving death threats
3·2 years agoWe should prosecute animal cruelty the same as human-related crimes. Most serial killers start with animals. By treating animal crimes the same as human crimes, we would lock up a lot of sick fucks early in their careers.

Technology@lemmy.world•96% of US Hospital Websites Share Visitor Data with Google, Meta, Data Brokers, and Other Third Parties, Study FindsEnglish
21·2 years agoThis is just a guess, but I would assume the hospitals doing this are unaware. They probably just put Google Analytics and Meta’s SDK on their website, completely oblivious to the fact that that shit vacuums up everything on the page, including text box inputs.

97·2 years agoJessica Rosenworcel is a champ. She has been fighting this fight for years. The week Ajit Pai (Ashit Pie) ended net neutrality using falsified public comments, a group gathered in front of the FCC to protest the change. I went down there for a few hours and Jessica came to the window and waved to us.

11·2 years agoDo kids still use these? Aka, are their parents forced to pay $100 bucks for this piece of 40 year old technology?
Love it when my coworkers reformat the code style, making it nigh impossible to understand what they actually changed, while greatly inflating their “contribution.”
It also blows away the git blame, making it hard to know who actually changed that one critical line of business logic 3 years ago that you need to understand before trying to fix some obscure bug.
I have one coworker who does this constantly and if you just looked at git blame, you’d think he wrote the entire code base himself.
