Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Major comics piracy hubs are shutting down. Here's how it happened.English
14·2 months agoWell, the thing is even if you trace it back to an account, what do you do then? Only a single pirate with a bit of opsec knowledge needs to have an account with e.g. a stolen credit card or whatever, and then they can just leak everything with no consequences…

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Copilot can't exit vim
13·3 months agoYou don’t have to move your hands while touch typing. This is the single biggest reason why vim is still used today, regardless of whether you have arrow keys or not. In fact vim does support arrow keys and using the mouse as well! It’s just much easier to edit files without needing to move your hands and/or use a touchpad/mouse.

1·4 months agoThe world is going to shit… also, I am asking out of pure curiosity - how does DPI interact with encryption where you live? Is encryption just plain illegal or what?

Technology@lemmy.zip•Banning children from VPNs and social media will erode adults' privacyEnglish
3·4 months agoYeah, I didn’t know about that, that sounds terrifying. At least I was still right in saying that they cannot block VPNs completely - you can still send traffic through HTTPS or DNS requests, but it is just too slow for most applications, however definitely enough to be able to communicate with other people in times of censorship. Based on my research Russia is also experimenting with CIDR whitelisting, which is even worse but does have the huge drawback of basically breaking the internet except for a few large sites.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Banning children from VPNs and social media will erode adults' privacyEnglish
71·4 months agoYou also can avoid all of these disruptions by camouflaging your packets as some generic protocol, which is already quite easy e.g. in Mullvad by using shadowsocks and ai disruption (randomising, among others, packet size and intervals). In fact, it will always be impossible to detect VPNs without deep packet inspection - and that would require banning ALL internet traffic encryption, which seems unrealistic because of the astronomical downsides, even in today’s political situation.

Technology@lemmy.world•New York police will use drones to monitor backyard parties this weekend, spurring privacy concernsEnglish
9·3 years agoAs long as you don’t use them, sure. They are composed of basic parts, just well adjusted to the purpose. But if you do decide do use them, be aware that you cannot interfere with any radio communications in any way and/or destroy someone’s property. Which does not mean I am against shooting down someone’s drone on your property that is spying you, it’s just not really legal per se.

That is actually pretty interesting! Are you sure it is the LEDs that you can hear? I would probably lean towards the mains 50Hz buzz being heard by you due to internal transformers
