There’s a fascinating cognitive dissonance that happens with drivers. People will carelessly speed past their own child’s school oblivious to the fact that car accidents are a leading cause of death, yet worry about unlikely events like serial killers or terrorism.

If we paved the road in front of every elementary school with some very bumpy cobblestones and put the crosswalk on a speed table, that would slow people right down. “I don’t want to launch my vehicle into a power line” is somehow easier for Americans to understand than “I don’t want to run over my neighbor’s child”.

I can only speak for the US and only the states I have lived in or visited, but getting a ticket is like winning a shitty lottery. Driving like everyone else (ubiquitous speeding, yielding at stop signs) is enough to make you eligible for a ticket. Whether or not you get one is based largely on luck and slightly on whether or not you know where cops like to sit. There’s not a ton of motivation to drive legally when our traffic laws are broken, vague, and don’t reflect reality of driving in America and even the people enforcing them regularly violate them. Around here the highway is posted 65-75mph in most places but in my subjective experience, 60-95mph tends to be 80% of drivers. Nobody stops at stop signs unless yielding to other drivers or a police officer is present.

Instead of spot enforcement (like the US) or camera surveillance and ticketing, I think road design (or in a lot of cases redesign) is the superior way to get higher levels of compliance with the law and to increase safety. Older people might not like it, but roundabouts have HUGE safety benefits. Road hierarchy could be better communicated visually or through tactile means with pavers or cobbles to slow traffic on secondary streets. Lights could be moved to the close side to keep people from rolling out into the crosswalk and to put them closer to where pedestrians stand so they’ll be seen.

The real villains, are people who speed in school zones and work zones. “Your speed and inattentiveness could KILL people,” is the message they should be getting, but drivers are so entitled they speed past their own kid’s schools :‘’'-(

I learned to tolerate 10 for my limited uses. Like you, my Windows PC jumped from 7 to 10. When 11 rolled around, the centered start menu was the first thing I noticed and it was an instant wtf moment.

I ride a class 3 ebike 66% of the time and various muscle-powered bikes the remainder of the time. 30mph makes most roads in my downtown accessible to me. I bought a class 3 for this reason. We’re too suburban for class 2 to keep up with traffic on most roads.

Where I live: Multi use paths: 20mph (buttholes are trying to lower it to 15mph which I can beat on any muscle-bike) Neighborhood roads: <=25mph (bikable but tend to not connect well) Collectors: <30-35mph (sometimes uncomfortable, but okay) Arterials: 40-60mph (you probably gunna die unless you are going downhill, have passed cars at 45-50mph on the downhill. Never wish to repeat 😳 Expressways: 65+mph (um…)

This is what I see when looking at this topic. So much talk about dangerous ebikes, but in my area most of it is coming from anti-tax groups who are mad that a tiny portion of money went to paint a bike lane or fix a trail. So they blame bikes while they drive around hitting peds in their Excursions and F250s.

Can evokes be dangerous, yes. Are ebikes the pressing danger menacing our roadways, no. If we could keep full blown gas dirtbikes off multi-use paths and make a few cars stop at crosswalks, that would make a bigger impact than every ebike in the state disappearing overnight.

I had this happen before but not in recent times. Not sure if others have experienced the same.

For a while I had my bootloader on a single drive but I now have my Linux bootloader on /dev/sda and my windows on /dev/sdb and toggle it in the bios when I need to use Windows. I haven’t had Windows overwrite anything in a long time. Could be a coincidence though.

Yeah, easier is better. I’ll have to confirm what apps outside of Jellyfin and Chromecast are needed, but I’ll compare some basic Roku devices. I could probably score one a online neighborhood marketplace for a few bucks.

I hear you. I used to teach classes in a particular field and most people followed our updates and events on Facebook. I tried for years to change that and pry people loose from the Zuck. Mostly unsuccessfully. I agree with the other user who suggested bridging protocols. Bridge them then incentivise use of the good one and/or disincentivise use of the evil one to naturally encourage people to migrate.

I’ve been seeing exactly that. Reading through these job descriptions is a bit depressing. I can’t virtue signal my lack of morality and unthinking subservience to my potential employer hard enough to make cutoff to become “Director of AI Shilling” or a “Dark Pattern Consent Violation Engineer”.

I know the kind of environments that won’t work for me. This will always limit the jobs I can and can’t work and I’m generally okay with that. I would love some of that bountiful defence contractor money, but I can’t ethically justify doing work that harms others or limits their freedom. Advertising tech would have been a good fit for me… if I had no sense of ethics.

It’s a tough realization that my gaming consoles, GPS Smart Watch, and fancy modern over-engineered car only became possible because tons of money was poured into building out related tech for defence and surveillance.

I imagine the cognitive dissonance must be really strong in someone working for some of these companies that have monetized governmentally sanctioned or corporately opportunistic civil rights abuses. Then again, we’re often kept apart, working in our own little areas where we’re safe from having to see the whole horrifying machine.

Then we’ll have to fund them at the state or local level. If a half a cent sales tax can fund a multi-city transportation district, then it should stretch even further for bikes. This should really be be taken from the pockets of the corporate giants of the word though.
