Look at it from the other side.

They were there when their subreddit was starting very, very small. Over time, with great effort and as a labor of love, their community grew to numbers they never dared to imagine possible, a successful buzzing community that gave them great frustrations and thrills, anxiety and joy. In a very real sense, this is their baby, they have been through thick and thin together. To hand this over to some indifferent, greedy and abusive asshole… the thought is too much to bear.

These people are suffering. They have a sense of belonging to a community that is being held hostage. To accept they were tricked and are being exploited is a horrifying thing to do.

Absolutely. I quit Facebook about a dozen years ago, Reddit was there to take its’ place.

Then my final visit to Reddit was on June 11th I think it was, the moment the first protest started I quit Apollo for the very last time.
Somewhere around this time, probably earlier, I did the same with Twitter.

This time, it was Kbin/Lemmy that were there, the only viable options, still tiny and awkward, the sudden influx still only a fraction of what Reddit has, yet it flooded the system like a bucket of water falling on top of a fly.

And yet here I am, and so are you, and many others. The variety and portions of content are still much smaller than Reddit, but this place has something that Reddit also had: a quality community, apparent from these discussions, or go look at the art in ArtPorn or TrafitionalArt, or sure, absolutely why not - the shitpostings.

This place pushes that intellectual button for me. And now I also give myself time to do the NYT Crossword and watch physics/cosmology videos on YouTube.

  • There was a Bart Simpson t-shirt my mom bought me when I was a kid. Bart said: Underachiever and proud of it.

I remember radio ads for some bullshit corporate product service bullshit, the announcer said “It’s a no brainer!”, and the simpleton character, meant to stand in for all of us, goes “Uhh… no brainer? Oh I like that, hyuck hyuck hyuck!”
I remember this ad making me angry. Then also being vaguely disturbed when I noticed that this cynical marketing profile was all over the place.

  • Whether or not such a collapsing object forms a black hole depends on the specific properties of the object. In some cases, an object may be very close to the threshold, having a hard time deciding whether or not to form a black hole.

Talk about tottering on the very edge of the infinite abyss itself!

I wonder what would happen if you zoom in on the math of that moment when the object finally commits, on the very boundary between relativity and particle physics, at the Planck scales they might be able to steal a glimpse or two of gravity handshaking the quantum world.

EDIT: …or splintering into an infinity of pieces, again.

  • Statement from Israeli government:

…all indications are that this was not Israeli orders, that this was rather, a Hamas rocket that fell short.

From past conflicts with the terrorists in Gaza, we know that on average about 33% of rockets that they shoot at us, fall short and land in Gaza.

If this happens to be the case - and it does not surprise me one bit that Hamas sees Gaza’s civilian population as cannon fodder/collateral damage, one in three of their own rockets hitting their own people - there are still a million articles and items and social media comments pushing the narrative blaming Israel.
