I was going to say, an old 1L ThinkCentre Tiny, Optiplex Micro, or HP Mini would fit the bill nicely. I already have one set up for retro gaming. It would be nice to get it set up as kore of an overall media center, with a remote-friendly interface. I know I can do that with Libre elec and Kodi but I’m not a fan. KDE is my desktop of choice so I’d love to see what they come up with. Plasma Mobile is solid so I would imagine it could be similar.

In my case, it wasn’t overheating. Drives rarely got above 75-80F. There were two large fans and plenty of ventilation to pull air through the enclosure. From what I’ve read, mostly on unRAID forums, it is USB that is the issue.
This would be awesome!
Roku has been one of the worst from a privacy standpoint, alongside Amazon devices. Google isn’t much better but for privacy, there is no off the shelf option better than AppleTV. Heck, even the beloved Nvidia Shield gets poor marks for privacy.
Nah, I looked into it and USB is just super unreliable for any sort of array. The drives all worked just fine if I ran them as individual drives.
If you’re going to run the drives as individual drives in the enclosure, you should be fine but if you set them up as a RAID array, USB won’t work well. The connection is too unreliable and will cause issues. I’ve tried with a 10-bay USB-C enclosure using unRAID, Fedora, and Debian. I tried multiple cables. It just kept dropping the connection during large transfers.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•An honest discussion in the current state of the FediverseEnglish
81·18 days agoExactly. Corporate social media is too much of a money making machine, for the corporations, advertisers, and influencers. The fediverse doesn’t add to anyone’s bottom line. I’m convinced that there is nothing that could make the average person leave Meta’s platforms.

I’m waiting on a Kobo Libra Colour right now. I looked at it and Boox. I went with Kobo because I didn’t want an Android tablet. If I was willing to spend more, I would have considered the Pocketbook which runs a custom Linux distro or the Supernote which does run Android but is super repairable and upgradable.
It’s like a baby step on the self hosting journey. Not as pure as Jellyfin but still a little better than Netflix. I paid for a Plex lifetime pass years ago, when they were still producing cool updates like DVR functionality for OTA broadcasts. I still run it but now Jellyfin is running alongside it with the intent of dropping Plex soon.

12·1 month agoI have it set up on my own home server. Before that, I had it set up on individual PCs. It’s super easy. I guess you mean public instances. I’ve never used one because it is so easy to set up for yourself.

Technology@lemmy.world•Plex increasing Lifetime Plex Pass cost to whopping $750English
4·1 month agoOr maybe they want monthly/annual/whatever subscribers, not lifetime, and so they’re making the lifetime pass prohibitively expensive. I have a lifetime pass I purchased a few years ago but after running Jellyfin alongside Plex for a few months, I don’t think I could recommend Plex to anyone who simply wants to host their own media.

I’ve been using Unmanic on my unRAID server but good to know what other options are out there.
