mammut@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft Will Charge for Windows 10 Security Updates in 2025English4·1 year agoI disagree that it’s more similar to service packs. Debian has dropped entire architectures at some releases, and they frequently break binary (and sometimes source) compatibility, far more frequently than service packs do. Hardware compatibility breakage is pretty common between releases too.
It’s probably true that Microsoft changes more between releases, but if you installed Debian on your 32-bit big endian MIPS hardware, you needed to switch to a different OS or buy new hardware when they drop support for Buster.

mammut@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•You can remove Edge and Bing Search on Windows 11 even if you don't live in EuropeEnglish107·1 year agoAre you sure it has no telemetry? The only way I can think to be sure would be to block it in your router. Lots of software still does telemetry even if you try to disable it. There was a researcher a while back who found out that iOS sends in telemetry even if you explicitly disable it. He had to basically MITM his own phone and watch all the packets in Wireshark, but he figured out it was sending telemetry even with all the telemetry options disabled.
