Regardless of the severity of the offense, sovereign nations ultimately have the right to decide who is or is not allowed into their countries.
If someone finds you trespassing in their garden, they make you leave. If you’re drunk in Kroger, once again, they make you leave. This is perfectly in keeping with the nature of the crime - if you’re in a place where you’re not allowed to be, including nations, you have to leave.
I fully agree with a legal path to emigrate to any and all countries, but only if done ahead of time and through the proper legal channels. (And it goes without saying that once those channels have been gone through, resident status should not be revoked without serious reason to do so, followed by due process.)
Breaking a country’s laws by entering illegally is already serious evidence against your being a good citizen; plus, regardless of how good a citizen you are, countries have a right to decide which non-citizens are or are not allowed to enter their countries in the first place, based on any and all conditions they alone deem relevant.
If you break in to my house and then ask me for a job, even if you’d be the best worker in the world, I’m still gonna respond with, “Get the hell out of my house”, and I’d be right to do so.
There shouldn’t be a path to legality - that just incentivizes more illegal immigration, because they know they’ll get residency eventually.
To be clear, I think what’s going on in El Salvador is abhorrent, and that at this point ICE is basically the Gestapo, but that doesn’t mean that countries shouldn’t have the right to decide who is and who isn’t allowed across their borders.
If I illegally crossed the border into Canada because I don’t like what Trump is doing, for example, they have every right to kick me out.
From what the article says, it seems like that should read, “Being in the country illegally has Detroit woman facing deportation”.

The country absolutely has an enormous surplus, it’s just that we waste it all on military contracts with little to no return.

Other than family pictures, etc., I’ve been working on a collection of the episodes of a show from when I was a kid in the late 80s, “Long Ago and Far Away”, showing fairy tales from around the world in a variety of art styles and media, with James Earl Jones as host. I’ve found maybe 2/3 of the episodes so far. Every few years I do another sweep to try to find more.
To provide a dissenting opinion, I’ve always preferred harpsichords to pianos, which is one of the reasons I love Bach so much.
Pianos somehow sound simultaneously harsher than harpsichords with the off-putting initial clunk of the keys, and boringly muted in comparison.
“A paper from Duke University”. This is a random, non-peer-reviewed, undergrad honors thesis. Having supervised honors theses myself, they are not exactly the height of sociological research. Also note that the author only proposes “throughlines” between eugenics and Melinda Gates’ work, by definition flimsy and tenuous, at best.
This is a perfect example of a Facebook conspiracy theory, based on shoddy, non-peer-reviewed, amateur “research”, but appealing to authority by attributing the paper to “Duke University”, with no understanding of the academic context of the paper in question.

For anyone else reading this, the problems with the other two “sources” are that the WaPo article is just an opinion piece disguised as “analysis”, and the Guardian source (an editorialized version of a much better Wall Street Journal piece) seems to actually imply that Gates didn’t pay any hush money to Epstein. Either way, it does make it clear that Epstein had nothing to do with Gates’ affair whatsoever, and was just trying to profiteer off it.
Note the fact that the language used by the hexbear above effectively claims the opposite of what their source implies, and leaves out the fact that there’s no evidence for any of these assertions. Never blindly trust a source from a hexbear. Actually, never trust a “source” from a hexbear at all, for that matter.
Edit: Also, for anyone reading this, only ever comment on the errors in a hexbear’s sources and arguments - don’t ever actually engage with a hexbear themselves, because your good faith will be wasted on their disingenuousness. This comment is just a fact-checking PSA for anyone who wondered about the reliability (or lack thereof) of the above sources. Note also the bullshit asymmetry principle well at work here.

Here is everything I can remember doing:
Downloaded the apk
Installed and opened the program
Allowed notifications
Input my four instances: lemm.ee, sh.itjust.works, lemmy.basedcount.com, and lemmy.ml
Hit “sync” and watched them sync. Three of these instances had almost the same number of communities (around 120), but one had none whatsoever. It took two or three minutes for that instance (basedcount) to sync all of the communities, and in the end, it wasn’t able to subscribe to about 20 of them for some reason. (maybe because nobody had ever gone to/searched for those communities from that instance before - I’ve heard this can lead to access problems, but you’d probably know more about that than I would)
About five minutes later, I got couple of notifications saying that 6(-ish) communities had been synced and that 18(-ish) had been unsubscribed across my instances. This confused me, so I checked my instance list and saw that all three of my instances with around 120 communities now had around 95.
I disabled notifications because they were starting to feel spammy.
I looked at the notification again and realized what had actually happened. I immediately uninstalled the program and resubscribed to as many communities as I could on lemm.ee, my main account.

This unsubscribed me from twenty+ communities on all of my instances. It first tried to subscribe all of my accounts to all of the communities of my largest instance, which is what I wanted it to do. One instance failed to sub to 20+ communities, which was fine, as it was a smaller instance.
Ten minutes later, however, I got a notification that it had unsubscribed all of my other instances from those communities as well. It took me about an hour to figure out most of the ones that had been lost, and even now I think I’m missing a few.
