Technology@lemmy.world•'Near Collisions' of Commercial Jets Happen All the Time: FAA RecordsEnglish
113·2 years agoCollision avoidance is an automated system built into all commercial planes. These “near misses” aren’t actually that close. Go look up TCAS and you’ll see what margins they work with.

Technology@lemmy.world•Student project consumes 17% of energy of traditional desalination plantsEnglish
143·2 years agoI hope you’re not being serious lol. The article says the desalination plant designed by this student uses 17% of the power a normal desalination plant, meaning a 5+x reduction in energy consumption.

Technology@lemmy.world•Russia starts blocking VPN at the protocol (WireGuard, OpenVPN) levelEnglish
17·2 years agoIf you’re savvy enough, sure. But for the lay person who doesn’t want a clouded view of the world, they likely won’t have the same resources or technical capabilities.

Technology@lemmy.world•Russia starts blocking VPN at the protocol (WireGuard, OpenVPN) levelEnglish
20·2 years agoTheoretically, yes, since there are options other than WG/OVPN available through Smart Protocol, which Alternate Routing leverages.

Technology@lemmy.world•Android malware steals user credentials using optical character recognitionEnglish
17·2 years agoMost integrated password managers should thwart this assuming the user doesn’t reveal their passwords, though. The only thing in plaintext that would be visible would be the username. Of course, this assumes that OCR is their only vector.

Technology@lemmy.world•Framework Sold Out of 3 Batches of Laptop 16 in Less Than 3 Hours.English
33·2 years agoI’m glad to see the reception on this. Framework is doing a lot of good to help drive consumers toward more repairable options, and drive competitors to hopefully do the same in the long run. Hats off to them.
RIP Drop. I do not have a good feeling about this acquisition. Same thing with Logitech 86ing the Blue brand name.

16·2 years agoCould also be useful for internal data transmission inside a chassis where, for whatever reason, a direct physical connection isn’t possible.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google is laying off employees at WazeEnglish
2·2 years agoI know it’s due to role redundancy, but ever since Waze was pulled more closely under the Google umbrella, every change they make worries me.

Technology@lemmy.world•Android spyware with over 1.5 million downloads sends your data to ChinaEnglish
12·2 years agoThis was my main concern. It felt very low effort and felt like a Reddit karma farmer, not a bot meant to spark discussion within the community. I wouldn’t have had an issue with the content if it was clear that the post was made by a bot.

Technology@lemmy.world•Android spyware with over 1.5 million downloads sends your data to ChinaEnglish
18·2 years agoI didn’t even notice it was missing the bot marker. Good catch.
@L3s@lemmy.world you plan on fixing that any time soon?

Technology@lemmy.world•Android spyware with over 1.5 million downloads sends your data to ChinaEnglish
5·2 years agoI noticed that after my comment. Still a low quality post from a bot seemingly farming for clicks through to articles, where a description summary from a human or better parsing from the bot could have improved the quality of the post.

Technology@lemmy.world•US could block Chinese customers from using AI cloud services: reportEnglish
32·3 years agoThere are plenty of people in my country who say and try to do things just as bad. Not to the scale of China, but do not for a second tell me that those same sentiments do not exist on this side of the Pacific.

82·3 years agoYou could say the same thing about quite a few people in the States, you know.
Die, die again.
