It is an alternative for a lot of other reasons and I love it dearly, but Codeberg is literally three donated servers in a single data center with some volunteers maintaining them. Some time ago the power went out and Codeberg was down for seven hours.

Well that’s just how Codeberg works. It’s run by volunteers and organized as a registered association. This association strives to be very democratic about what happens to the platform, but you have to join it to gain insights and voting rights.

Of course you don’t have to and most users of Codeberg don’t - but you can and this makes Codeberg a lot more open and democratic than any other commercial platform.

There was a blog post not too long ago, where an Ex-Mozilla engineer shared his thoughts on exactly this topic. The tldr was something like

I share this sentiment, but it won’t make the money people happy, so I don’t think it’ll happen.

Can you ELI5, where is immich-go installed? On my new Immich server (unraid), on my Synology? On an intermediate device?

Shouldn’t matter, as long as the device running immich-go can access your photos (locally or over a network share) and the web api of your immich instance.

I don’t see how this would be easier as it later adds an extra step, where you have to move immich from your Synology to Unraid. However, if you have to deal with a slow or unreliable network between those two hosts, it could make sense.

Yes, do yourself a favour and split these tasks. Migrate your photos to immich first, shut down Synology Photos and test that everything works as expected, then go on with your remaining migration to Unraid.
