Because “brain chip that reads your mind to help with depression/bipolar disorder” is barely a hop, skip and a jump from all sorts of fun dystopian nightmares. On the tame end, something that already happens, is the makers of implantable devices going out of business; and then you have unsupported, degrading medical hardware implanted inside you that, if it malfunctions or breaks, you’re just stuck with and can’t get it fixed. Bad enough when that malfunction is with a vision- or hearing-related implant, but a brain chip could fuck up all sorts of things if it goes wrong.

On the more fanciful, yet-to-be-realized end of possible terrifying outcomes, the sky’s the limit – mind-reading, malware, rudimentary mind-control, the list goes on. I realize that sounds very sci-fi and like I’m a paranoid crackpot, but this is actually far more viable than you might believe at first. If they’re actively already trying to make them effective at treating mental disorders, if they are indeed effective, then that doesn’t require much further tweaking to go from treating them to causing them.

Truthfully, BCIs have the potential to be so dangerous that they either should not be developed or should only be developed with open standards and user control in mind. And absolutely not developed by for-profit entertainment companies.

At the point we were down to a few thousand individuals, I should imagine that the climate not being super hyper mega fucked helped immensely in ensuring those people had adequate food – you aren’t going to be running down a deer (or a rabbit, or any other wild game) in the post-climate-apocalypse world if all the deer are dead because the food chain supporting the deer population collapsed. You aren’t going to be farming because extreme weather variations will make it impossible, you might be in for a drought or a monsoon and you’ll certainly not have accurate weather forecasting to go off of by that point. Foraging? I sure hope none of the various food chains and water cycles supporting the growth of forage-able food has collapsed either (they probably will). Fishing? Ocean acidity, microplastics, and global warming are all fighting to be the thing that kills that off, take your pick.

I don’t wish for this to happen, mind you, but we are clearly living in the dumbest possible timeline, and so it is the only solution that makes sense

at this point I’m fully expecting the only thing that keeps us from extincting ourselves with global warming is almost extincting ourselves with nuclear winter.

I will never understand why that dipstick didn’t just spend some more time at a range. So much so that I’m starting to believe that it was a false flag.

Like, really, you try to assassinate someone under secret service protection – arguably making them one of the most difficult people to assassinate – and you don’t even put in a few weekends of range time? You don’t even zero your optic properly? You get as far as using a rangefinder and figuring out the distance to your target ahead of time, but you don’t bother zeroing your optic. Really? Currently shit scared as a gay guy with autism. I studied this, on my own, out of curiosity – how a relatively modern society can commit atrocities upon its own citizens that it deems “lesser”.

In high school, where we had entire chapters of our history books that we focused on for weeks dedicated to things like the civil war and the war of 1812, WWI and WWII were (in my recollection) split between a single chapter titled “The World Wars” or something like that, and anything later was usually glossed over in even briefer fashion (Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold War all shared a single chapter. I’m not even sure the Cuban Missile Crisis was given a sentence. But holy fuck did they want you to recount in great detail all the facts and figures of the revolutionary war and civil war, down to excruciatingly painful detail. – I digress, it just irked me then and it still does now).

My point is, nobody chased me down and beat me over the head with a textbook to research the Holocaust and how it happened, nobody made me learn the finer points of going from an economic crisis to an angry little egomaniac getting elected to gas chambers and piles of bodies. We were taught what happened, in the driest fashion, but they never taught us how it happened. For me, nobody had to. I wanted to learn, so that I’d hopefully recognize the signs if they ever happened again. And now I can’t afford to leave on my own, while watching them slowly follow the exact same playbook in almost the exact same way. You start with the most vulnerable people and expand that over time to “everyone you don’t like”, and I have no illusions about being a friend to republicans.

Sure, they could pull a Nintendo and do that; but then you’ve got a handheld running Linux. Linux that’s trying to tell the user how they should use it/how they’re not allowed to use it.
