Physics@mander.xyz•After 10 years of gravitational-wave astrophysics, evidence has supported Hawking's black hole ideaEnglish
5·6 months agoHawking’s theory says that the final area of the black hole has to be bigger than the sum of the two initial areas, says Chatziioannou, “and this is what we demonstrated observationally with that signal.”
This kind of proof is just what Hawking hoped for a decade ago, when the first gravitational wave detection was announced. He actually reached out to one of the scientists involved in that effort to see if gravitational waves could be used to test this prediction, says Isi.

TechTakes@awful.systems•Stop Talking to Technology Executives Like They Have Anything to SayEnglish
9·6 months agoI can’t believe we ever thought that someone like sleezy Zuckerberg had anything worth saying to begin with.
On day two of his testimony on Capitol Hill, Representative Billy Long, a Republican from Missouri, was the first to mention Facemash.com, the website Zuckerberg first created at Harvard in order to compare photos of his classmates and allow users to rate their looks… In an awkward exchange, Long asked Zuckerberg what Facemash is and whether it is still up and running. Zuckerberg called it a “prank website” in response, and claimed that it “has nothing to do with Facebook.”
It’s almost comical to me that it’s serious until someone calls them on it, THEN it’s just a joke. FACEmash has nothing to do with FACEbook. Fucking lizard person.

Technology@lemmy.world•Boeing says it can’t make money with fixed-price contractsEnglish
1·2 years agoThat happens all the time. I went through several government contracts where a company would come and under bid the current contract by a significant amount, win the bid, offer the current contractors 3/4 of what they were being paid and fill in the rest with new hires. There is no continuity between contracts so unless a bunch of the old contractors took a pay cut to stay on they would come in and start from scratch with all new processes and procedures and absolutely slow down productivity for all those they were supposed to be providing support.
