Canada@lemmy.ca•Class action suit re maplewashing grocery stores
12·3 months agoDefinitely should be a national suit. Not sure how it will apply given differences in Québec’s legal system, but I don’t understand how it could not be considered misleading for a store to label the origin of a product differently than what is stated on the product.
Never thought I’d see an MMM article on here, but it’s definitely relevant.
Which part? The southern prairie has ‘grid’ roads (magenta; literally roads in a grid, every mile E/W, every two N/S), with highways connecting the many towns and cities, settled because of agriculture. Then the northern shield (forest) has roads where they fit best to mainly indigenous communities.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Can a non-corporate grocery chain work across Canada?
7·3 months agoIt seems there are a fair few newer Co-op grocery stores that have been constructed in various places in Saskatchewan in the past decade. Co-op seems fairly successful in more rural locations and they’re often the only store in many small towns. Being diversified in hardware/building materials, fuel, ag, and grocery probably helps too.
As long as a nationalized grocery chain also has the underlying distribution network, it should be able to be successful.

homeassistant@lemmy.world•Airgradient: First air quality monitor to be officially compatible with Home AssistantEnglish
4·3 months agoCO2 concentration is an indicator of indoor air quality and can generally inform the quality of ventilation. Indoor plants likely won’t exchange enough to be effective.
Baseline (outdoor) is around 400 ppm, 1000 ppm is generally the ‘comfort limit’ or where some cognitive effects start to become present (drowsiness), then over 2000 ppm is generally the unhealthy limit.

2·3 months agoI use Ultimate Updater connected to gotify to tell me which machines have updates with a noti every day. I can then run
updateand it will take snapshots and upgrade everything when needed. It really only does linux systems and wont do docker, but there’s watchtower (the one that’s still alive) to do that.

Canada@lemmy.ca•No fines for big grocers that promoted imported food as Canadian
81·4 months agoBest to look at the actual product label. Even produce will usually have its origin on the sticker.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Plug-in balcony solar panels could mean cheaper power. But Canada needs to get on board first
1·4 months agoAB and SK have among the higher electricity rates across all the provinces, but not by a considerable amount.
I agree, solar (with storage) does make sense for a community not connected to the grid and using generators locally, but a community being there thus makes it a populated place.
Is there a shortage of panels? I had no trouble getting mine and there’s been no indication from suppliers that stock is limited.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Plug-in balcony solar panels could mean cheaper power. But Canada needs to get on board first
3·4 months agoAh yes, my mistake, we should definitely be considering the solar PV that’s going to be serving the grid in unpopulated parts of the country.
Still, my statement is still true when considering the north.

News@lemmy.world•Newsom launches statewide task force to clear homeless encampments
11·4 months agoYour initial comment read like, “we shouldn’t provide access to housing for anyone because some don’t actually want it.”
I believe a better solution would be, “we should provide access to housing and if some don’t want it, they won’t be forced to use it.”
It’s definitely a complex issue, but the first step should be compassion and not eliminating practical options because they might not suit a small subset of the population.

7·4 months agoAND we have less sunlight.
Perhaps in BC, yes, but the rest of Canada has higher solar potential than much of Europe.

News@lemmy.world•Newsom launches statewide task force to clear homeless encampments
231·4 months agoYou have had conversations with many unhoused people and they’ve indicated they would much rather prefer sleeping in places with little security, a high risk of their few possessions being stolen, and little protection from the elements, to a safe, stable place of residence?
I’m quite skeptical.
Youtube/Google is an advertising company, they only care if they’re getting paid.

1·4 months agoMakes sense…if we primarily used print still. Not so much for online articles.

I’ve noticed grocers are attempting to skirt the definitions by claiming things are “prepared” in Canada, even if the product itself is foreign. I’m sure that’s how they’ll attempt to get by this lawsuit.
