There isn’t a large influx of Spanish speaking tourists who demand that the locals speak in their language in the US. This is more akin to a shopkeeper blaring speakers with high pitched tones that only teenagers can hear.

Oh I love that idea! It draws from the historical presentation of salt in vessels like boxes or cups and it would look lovely as the centerpiece of a full set.
That’s very pretty: it looks like a swirling potion in the center.
What do you plan to put inside it? It makes me think of incense burners but I don’t think that’d be good for wood…

Does it feel like these “game changing” techs have lives that are accelerating? Like there’s the dot com bubble of a decade or so, the NFT craze that lasted a few years, and now AI that’s not been a year.
The Internet is concentrating and getting worse because of it, inundated with ads and bots and bots who make ads and ads for bots, and being existentially threatened by Google’s DRM scheme. NFTs have become a joke, and the vast majority of crypto is not far behind. How long can we play with this new toy? Its lead paint is already peeling.

[…] in blog posts and videos and published memoirs, autistic teens and young adults described living for a decade or more without any way to communicate, while people around them assumed they were intellectually deficient.
On a related note… only 5% of hearing parents with a deaf child will learn sign language.

Honestly? Yeah, I thought you were serious, because I’ve seen that attitude expressed before. Generally it’s more “this hazy, unspecified population can be sacrificed to help me deal with the existential dread that me and my world are walking off a cliff” than “dear me I so DO delight in death”, but it makes my teeth ache.
Thank you for clarifying, and I’m sorry for jumping on you.

Referring to the potential starvation deaths of a large group of people as a positive for climate change is like saying you’re glad someone died early from a car accident instead of suicide.
Pretty much.
I spend my workweek masking, so when I get home to my family I’m too socially exhausted to do much more than repetitive behaviors, and socializing, even with family, is grating. I feel like I can breathe when I’m alone and not feeling watched/observed/perceived, but I still need time to let my hackles drop. It makes laundry, cleaning, preparing meals, shopping, running errands, scheduling, etc., so fucking hard to do, and it’s like I have a limited amount of attention/energy to devote to things, regardless of how much time I have. There are days when I get weeks worth or work done and months when I struggle to tread water.
The one bright light is that there are family members who don’t understand, but are patient, and ones who DO and I’m getting more comfortable saying “I don’t hate you, I love you, I just can’t stand you right now and I don’t want to snap at you to get you away from me, so please let me be”.
It was easier to balance when I had a more solitary job but… I couldn’t live on that money for long, so… :/

No human institution, agreement, or connection will ever be free of both bad actors and blameless mistakes, so there must be a way to end such things in order to preserve life, dignity, and happiness.
Our institutions are created to serve us as people, not to bind us for the sake of being binding.

In fairness, it can be both: larger, settled populations of one ethnic group in a country make it easier for other members of the same group to integrate now, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t (and isn’t) racism involved in making it harder for other ethnic groups to immigrate and settle in the past.

I assume at least half of this needs to go down the throats of oil tycoons in order to have any real effect.

“Mind Your Business,” Declares Man, Seen Repeatedly Throwing Himself Down Up Escalator

That’s just so sad to me. Is there any place we could tell people to store or upload these things? I hate that we’re losing so much because of one company’s hubris.
Honestly even an instance that’s just “deletedposts.lemmy” or something like that, to save posts that were useful.

Also for whatever reason Hot has been dredging up posts from 2-3 years ago.

My old cat used to do this, because I’d feed her and then walk away. But once I started sitting with her she started to eat a lot more.
It’s not necessarily that your cat wants extra food: sometimes they just feel vulnerable while eating (especially as they get older) and want someone they trust watching over them.
What you’ve said is true, but it doesn’t negate my point: the frustration felt by locals dealing with entitled tourists demanding their language be accommodated. The US doesn’t have a similar problem to Spain on that front.
