Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Why Mainers Are Falling Hard for Heat Pumps | The percentage of households burning home heating oil is the highest in the country. Yet no other state is adopting climate-friendly heat pumps as fast.English4·2 years agoWe live in Maryland, and our house has a 30 year old natural gas furnace in the basement. When that goes we are definitely planning on switching to something more eco-friendly. Anyone else on here in this area who has a heat pump? I admittedly have not done a ton of research on them or if they are effective in our climate zone.

Autism@lemmy.world•Neurotypicals, what do autistic people look like to you?English
6·2 years agoI was using it to say that I am ‘neurotypical’, since that is how the OP said it. I put it in quotes because I don’t really even know if anyone is typical lol. I just mean I don’t have any diagnosed conditions besides Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which I don’t think counts.
If I used the wrong term, I am sorry, just let me know a better way to phrase it! :-)

30·2 years agoI am friends with an autistic person, and all I see is a slightly awkward guy. Which is totally fine to me because I am super awkward myself so that probably has little to do with his autism. We like to talk about our shared interests. He is more like me than different, even though I am ‘NT’.

3·2 years agoI wish we could afford one, but so many other maintenance issues come up, and our property tax and home insurance seem to go up every year, so who knows if we’ll ever be able to. We’re also well below even the new median salary of homes getting them. Just glad we can afford our reasonable mortgage and modest home in our high CoL area.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL in 1893, the US Supreme Court held 9–0 that the tomato should be classified as a vegetable rather than a fruit in Nix v. Hedden, 149 U.S. 304, for purposesEnglish
4·2 years agoYep, fresh tomatoes fall under chapter 7 of the HTS - “Edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers”. Pretty much every country uses the first six digits of the HTS code, so at some point the WCO (World Customs Organization - the ones who manage the HTS) agreed with that idea.
Also, in their Explanatory Notes for chapter 7, they say this:
" In headings 07.09, 07.10, 07.11 and 07.12 the word “vegetables” includes edible mushrooms, truffles, olives, capers, marrows, pumpkins, aubergines, sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharata), fruits of the genus Capsicum or of the genus Pimenta, fennel, parsley, chervil, tarragon, cress and sweet marjoram (Majorana hortensis orOriganum majorana)."

Technology@lemmy.world•Workers at companies that tested out a 4-day workweek are happier and more efficient — and firms made more money. One lawmaker says it's 'here to stay.'English
18·2 years agoThis. I’ve been at my job for a year as a remote out of state employee. All of the sudden, they decided we needed weekly team meetings and virtual team building when we had none before. My job is not collaborative, everyone on the team has a different role and most things can be handled over email/teams. I like my coworkers, but we’ve been working great together without all this crap. Even my manager doesn’t like it but it’s being forced on her from higher up, half the time she doesn’t have anything to share at the team meeting that couldn’t have been a one sentence email.
Edit to add: oh and these weekly team meetings have cameras on required, when before any of the few meetings we had never required this. Seems like one of the higher up read some article about ‘building virtual teams’ and went to town without actually stopping to think whether it fits.

9·2 years agoAnd not even all desk jobs. My job is supporting a manufacturing client with their imports. Until both them and the courier/shipping lines decide to change to a four day work week, I’m going to need to be ready to field urgent HTS and document requests, even though I work a remote desk job.
