Technology@lemmy.world•Google mocks Epic’s proposed reforms to end Android app market monopolyEnglish
18·2 years ago“Epic’s filing to the US Federal Court shows again that it simply wants the benefits of Google Play without having to pay for it,” Google’s spokesperson said. “We’ll continue to challenge the verdict, as Android is an open mobile platform that faces fierce competition from the Apple App Store, as well as app stores on Android devices, PCs, and gaming consoles.”
Is this the mocking? Its not a very good mocking!

6·2 years agoIts a good watch and entertaining throughout but my biggest question was why Fanta Cake didn’t have links to Fanta and Cake added as part of It’s first 24 versions.
It looks like it was cleaned up by a couple a project teams but I would have thought the original author would have added the obvious outbound links organically.

Edit: Its now in the cakes template and linked from 370 pages. I wonder if the OP video was counting template links? If so they would be adding strong community links.

I guess they would call that a win

18·2 years agoIn a 1999 essay on reasons for the male predominance in computer science, applied mathematician Dianne P. O’Leary wrote: .
Suggestive pictures used in lectures on image processing … convey the message that the lecturer caters to the males only. For example, it is amazing that the “Lena” pin-up image is still used as an example in courses and published as a test image in journals today.

2·2 years agoThe implication is of course that less successful titles will not be ported either because the company runs out of money or feels they are better off working on their next title than investing more resources on porting a middling title to a second choice platform.

55·2 years agoIf small devs are expected to support every platform day one that increases the barrier to entry.
A world where small teams start their release on one or two platform they find advantageous and then port their successful titles to other platforms after is probably safest for them and offers the most product diversity for consumers.

On 23rd of March 2023 I asked a family member to give me a prompt and they asked “what day is 19th of April?”.
It answered “The 19th of April falls on a Tuesday.”, which was true last year but completely misleading if I thought we were taling about the coming month.
Was it wrong or just unclear? Either way it wasn’t helpful.

2·2 years agoI wasn’t too concerned previously as my routers are only exposing their services to the local network.
I understand the view that it’s a superior UX but I was taken aback that it was guessing passwords for other devices on the network.

Technology@lemmy.world•LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for “Home as a Service”English
21·2 years agoI have a 2017 era Samsung TV. I use it to connect to a media server that my router runs if I plug in a USB drive. This just worked so I assumed it was an open unauthenticated service.
Then I tried to use VLC running on my phone to connect and found myself presented with a login screen. When I investigated further I found the router’s media server defaulted to using the the router’s admin credentials.
So it looks like the TV had been programmed to try common default router creds before showing a login prompt to the user as a “convenience”.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apparently, Google's new AI-based search is quite honest.English
5·2 years agoIn its place, Google has adopted a new motto: “Do the right thing.” This motto is more specific and less ambiguous than “Don’t be evil,”
As long as we are interpreting “evil” as an adjective describing ones actions these seem pretty similar.

Most laptops have a physical slider that can mask the camera. But I don’t know of any tablets or phones that offer this feature.
