Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Former Microsoft developer says Windows 11's performance is "comically bad," even with monster PCEnglish112·1 year agoAs an end user, I don’t care about proprietary garbage, I want my mouse to work :). I understand the aversion to proprietary stuff etc. But non techie end users don’t give a flying fuck.
Also, everyone has had an MS account since the msn messenger and Hotmail heydays. That is an absolute non issue for 99% of the people tbh.
Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Former Microsoft developer says Windows 11's performance is "comically bad," even with monster PCEnglish6·1 year agoBut that’s the entire point. The windows UI is still easy, especially for people that have always used windows. There have only been gradual changes. :)
And to slap in an anecdote, I am quite proficient with everything IT related. I try installing Linux once a year on average, in general I try to recommended “noob distros” . I always go back to windows after a few weeks at best. You really have to make an big effort to fully go to Linux. I end up spending more time dealing with the OS itself than doing the stuff I want.
I can absolutely see the appeal of it, but I don’t enjoy it :)
Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Former Microsoft developer says Windows 11's performance is "comically bad," even with monster PCEnglish4013·1 year agoBecause Linux doesn’t just work out of the box.
Somehow the Linux evangelists never understand that point.
All your peripherals, no matter how old, and all your (legacy) software just works on windows. Maybe the OS isn’t blazing fast and there is more and more so called bloatware (at least according to FOSS people), but if I plug in my 10y old Logitech wireless mouse, it works in 10 sec. In Linux I’d have to start searching for a solution, a driver, a little hack, a script, a controller repository, etc… It will work eventually, but it’s not intuitive. Doubly so for people that were raised on windows.
Linux is absolutely not user friendly for non techies that have 20y of windows habits in them.

Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@beehaw.org•The fall of Firefox: Mozilla's once-popular web browser slides into irrelevance2·1 year agoNope. Doesn’t allow gestures on internal pages. Eg new tabs, menu, settings, etc… It doesn’t work in the entire browser
Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@beehaw.org•The fall of Firefox: Mozilla's once-popular web browser slides into irrelevance4·1 year agoThe day Firefox gets native mouse gestures is the day I swap. Until then will continue to be a very happy Vivaldi user.

They’re like the second largest Twitter market in the world. Why would they be more attuned to Mastodon vs Twitter?
Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Discord users are cancelling their Nitro after new mobile layout updateEnglish71·1 year agoYou’re not. Some opeople are overreacting big time. “change is bad”. This ux change is so minor compared to what some other places have done in the past…
Like always the vocal few are making are making a mole hill into a mountain again.

Opera chat-tabs. Opera has a sidebar for chat clients (eg messenger, WhatsApp, telegram,…) built-in. It works really well and is prettier than the Vivaldi implementation. Still sticking with Vivaldi though
Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Brave appears to install VPN Services without user consentEnglish112·2 years agoTry it out. It’s a sidebar that allows you to put all kinds of websites and tools in small pop-out windows.
A less visually appealing, but much more powerful version of the opera chat sidebar.
I’ve tried to get something similar in Firefox, but nothing comes even close.
Built-in functions >>> addons any day of the week.
(cfr mouse gestures)

Theres basically no high end android tablet in that size factor, but I won’t use fucking IOS just to get my favo form factor. iOS is so neutered and unpractical in comparison to android. It’s so weird that iOS became so popular to me… It’s still stuck 10y ago in like 90% of its os design ideas.

Afaik in many European countries with legalized prostitution (eg Holland, Belgium,…) there is certainly no increase in illegal prostitution. But please, prove me wrong.
All research also indicates legalization upsides far outweigh the downsides.
Firipu@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•When social media silences sex workers, we all lose.English24·2 years agoNo, sex work should be legalized and become a protected trade, just like other work. Only by legalizing it can you get rid of a large chunk of the shady part of it. (never all of it, but legalized sex work is 100% better than Grey zone sex work like it is now in so many places…)
Firipu@startrek.websiteto World News@lemmy.ml•'Scandalous': Anger as BBC 'refuse to cover' anti-Brexit rally in London2·2 years agoFair enough. Most articles are still about the original article, but it does seem the bcc (or at least the dinosaurs in control) has its own (shitty) trans agenda… .
Thanks for not attacking me, but giving actual info. Appreciate it.
I’ll certainly be more wary about the bbc in the future.
Firipu@startrek.websiteto World News@lemmy.ml•'Scandalous': Anger as BBC 'refuse to cover' anti-Brexit rally in London61·2 years agoOK, that’s one really article that was in bad faith, but I would argue the topic has journalistic value. But it should have been more nuanced.
Does that make the entire bbc transphobic? I am in full support of trans rights (I have a gender fluid child), but not everything is 100% black and white (cfr gender ;)) , one bad article doesn’t make the entire bbc transphobic.
Firipu@startrek.websiteto World News@lemmy.ml•'Scandalous': Anger as BBC 'refuse to cover' anti-Brexit rally in London71·2 years agoCan you expand on that? They’re my main news source and I’ve never got transphobic vibes from them.
Ever heard of a job? Some people need to work with a specific software suite as part of their job, regardless of their personal convictions :)
I have to use office and chrome on windows at work, I don’t get any choice in the matter.
