That’s not far off for some of us. That’s about 25 bucks a month, and until about 2 years ago I was making just enough to have about 30 bucks left over at the end of the month that I didn’t spend on bills or food. Then I did fairly well for about 2 years, with about 200 bucks a month left over… Then my mom passed away 2 months ago, and since my job was being her caregiver, I’m now jobless. :/ life sucks

Dharma Curious@startrek.websitetoFrugal@lemmy.world•What are some things that used to be expensive, but which no longer are?English81·1 year agoNot too terribly long ago, clothing was super expensive. Like, make a dress from burlap or old feed sacks instead of buying something expensive. Some companies that sold feed and seed would print floral patterns on the sacks because they knew customers would turn the old sacks into clothing for their children.

I ask because I’ve been meaning to switch to my alt, but I made a point of subbing to as many communities as possible to make Lemmy more fun to use for me, and good lord, it’s a lot to do.

I did CenturyLink (phone company) and HSN and QVC. She did dish network, directv and Eddie Bauer. It was easier then to find wfh jobs than it is now. Then it was unusual, but no stigma. Now it’s like you’re an evil clown bent on molesting the village’s sheep if you even suggest it. -_-

Dharma Curious@startrek.websiteto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL: There are several mass shooting lists for countries other than the US, on WikipediaEnglish8·1 year agoCommiserate? Not quite right, but almost there. I get what you mean, though. Back in wide eyed “the democratic party is wonderful and flawless!” days as a teenager I used to think of Canada as this sort of perfected image of what the US could be. When I found out they had their own shit, and much of it just American shit imported north, I felt terrible knowing others were going through these same battles, but it made me feel less alone, if that makes sense.

I’m a basic user with mostly basic needs. But the only thing that ever gets me back on windows is when my college requires a program specific to a class. Linux is just freaking better, even at the very basic, mostly doing browser based shit level.
Iunno, the capitalist pigs love that reserve army of labor.
Dharma Curious@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Smartphone manufacturers still want to make foldables a thingEnglish2·1 year agoYes. But smaller, and with a screen where the keyboard should be, and no bezel between the screens. Media consumption device, not something for any real productivity. Very lightweight, good for watching youtube or hulu, but clamshell so it protects the screen.
Dharma Curious@startrek.websiteto Technology@lemmy.world•Smartphone manufacturers still want to make foldables a thingEnglish251·1 year agoSame! I had the LG v60 dual screen case, and loved it. Thats the farthest I’m willing to go, though. It was unwieldy, and almost impossible to use a popsocket with, no way to use a wallet case, et cetera. It’s not worth that price tag for less options just for the occasional use of a bigger screen.
Now, foldable tablet? That’s something I’d be down for (in theory. I am poor.). Closes up small enough for a pocket, folds out when you use it. Only screen on one side, so it can tossed in a bag without worrying about it, because it’s closed up and the screen is protected.
This has been my argument to people who say it’s not possible for us to get to some dystopian point with automation, loss of jobs, AI, et cetera. "just unplug it!’
Bish, we can’t get companies to stop grinding up plastic and dumping it in the ocean to save 0.00001 Dollars. You think we can stop fucking skynet? Bezos will never unplug Alexa, even if Alexa became sentient and tried to kill all the homeless.

Dharma Curious@startrek.websiteto Fediverse@lemmy.world•The Fediverse is working just as intended.English3·1 year agoI am unreasonably excited about this. Where I live, there’s no decent options for Internet or cell signal. Which means normal calling/texting doesn’t work, and regular Wi-Fi calling/texting is choppy at the best of times. My whole family uses WhatsApp for everything. I’m hoping I can get them to switch to something like this once it’s stable.
