IRC is actually somewhat federated, as one network can consist of multiple servers hosted by different people.

You could still use WebDAV. It’s simple and works with most file managers.
I planned to make a Mastodon client for KDE and name it “Kulupu”. But it was stalled and Tokodon appeared earlier.
