  • You know I’ve had thoughts about exactly this problem; what if a species evolved extreme intelligence but had no access to dry land to develop technologies.

    Incoming speculation:

    Tap for spoiler

I envisioned it would be something like octopus, because they absolutely fit the bill with tentacles workable as manipulation appendages, and would absolutely have developed technologies if they lived more than a couple years, and raised their young to pass on information.

I suspect they would be capable of observing stuff around them and understanding how it works at least as well as early agrarian societies, since they have proven able to figure out things like opening jar lids (even from the inside!) and escaping their tanks and stuff. So we’d see them creating nets to ranch fish, and I suspect their technology, continuing down that path, would probably be temperature and bioengineering-based, since electricity would be an epic challenge.

But you can create biological solutions to like… most stuff, if that’s all you’ve got to work with (in fact there’s a whole field called biomimicry that focuses on finding solutions to modern problems in already-existing forms through nature, and the solutions are almost always simple and effective) Selective breeding wouldn’t be fast or anything but it would do. At least until they sort out other stuff. Ocean life already has a huge huge range of features, it would only be a matter of choosing the right starting creature.

As for heat tech, there are natural heat sources like vents, but there are also sources like radiation/radioactive materials. The water does a good job shielding the radioactivity, so they could probably use the heat generated from either source to do basic mechanical work using something like steam engines. Could also be used to transform materials (cooking food, melting soft metals, etc.)

My storage doesn’t randomly disconnect, but frequently (and randomly) when I open saved files, three to six other files open alongside it for whatever reason and that can get a bit overwhelming and for sure bogs everything down.

Very helpful for making diverse connections between the files (how my OS knows which files are related is beyond my comprehension), but way too much for daily use.

  • The good news is with all the small plastic bits floating around the environment, it’s only a matter of time until something evolves to decompose it. Tons and tons of surface area in a wide variety of environments and exposed to a wide variety of microorganisms. I mean heck even our anaerobic gut microbes are getting a chance! And plastic is basically just energy in solid form, so it’ll happen sooner or later.

The bad news is if that happens while we still use plastics, we are going to have a bad time with it.

We probably won’t even know it’s happening until it’s spread far and wide.

  • I really hope what they mean is clean water.

It can happen; there’s a paper mill by me that was actually an important part of the river cleanup process when the river was far worse than it is today. It takes water from the river, uses it for their needs, then treats it and returns it to the river far far cleaner than they took it out, which has been a net benefit for the entire downstream river ecosystem. That plan, and their follow-through, is the only reason that mill exists at all.

Thing is, where are they going to find this not-particularly-clean water to treat and return? Are they going to need all new infrastructure built to accommodate this?

And why is that cheaper/easier/whatever than just making a closed loop cooling system, which they could have done from the being…

  • I haven’t worn a bra in decades other than occasional for a nice outfit sort of stuff.

I don’t consider it self-care, I just don’t have boobs worth bra-ing up. Why waste the money for something that does nothing?

Self care is doing whatever makes you comfortable, not what other people say should make you more comfortable.

Lots of people, especially fem-presenting people, would be wildly uncomfortable with their nipples being visible through a tighter shirt, and you know what? That’s super understandable. People give me looks and comments not infrequently. It’s uncomfortable. That’s reasonable. I’ve stopped caring what small-minded people think so I’m over it, but it takes years to get comfortable with that, and that’s the opposite of self-care if it’s not something you already want to do.
