Science@mander.xyz•The human eye can see ‘invisible’ infrared light - The Source - Washington University in St. Louis
13·2 years agoYes in a vacuum where you are only trying to capture a pinpoint light source. The sun is many orders of magnitude greater and refracted through an atmosphere of gas, water molecules and dust. Are you saying none of these are factors in the ability for a camera to capture what the human eye can only observe in very specific circumstances? If I’m still wrong, please explain yourself better than just basic information on how a camera works.

41·2 years agoDo you suppose the green flash phenomenon should be revisited? A combo of light, atmosphere and the human eye seems reasonable to me.

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Climate-heating gases reach record highs, UN reports | World Meteorological Organization sees ‘no end in sight to the rising trend’, largely driven by fossil fuel burning4·2 years agoBurning fossil fuels like trying to get to the center of the tootsie pop. Except instead of a delicious center the goal is to maximize profits at the expense and death of everyone else. The only way this really makes sense is just pure greed and an inability to be willing to take any sort of loss on a resource that was brutally won over several generations of warfare and eventual court room litigations.
We all need to understand that this is the reason switching to renewable energy is stalling even though the technology now exists and is cheaper than ever. Oligarchs are not unique to RUS or US they proliferate every government around the world and all of them have a vested interest in the delaying of human advancement for profit. Whether they launder their ethics through a board of directors at a large corporation or eschew all norms and seek to launch political coups to advance their own agendas it’s all the same.
There is no one in power to affect policy either locally or globally who has the capacity to do what is best for the average citizen. Power is bought at the benefit of you or me and is exchanged easily for words and loosened morality. Thoughts and prayers for whatever comes after and from the collapse of humanity, whether it’s a different sentient species or our descendants trying to eek out a life in the charred remains of what we left behind. Because truly thinking about the problems and praying about is the only thing anyone with a modicum of sway can do before the money talks and forces their actions.
If we’re lucky, real change is possible in our lifetimes the cost will be the collective comfort of the masses but well worth it.
Welcome to my rant, leave your thoughts below we’re all screaming into a void anyhow.

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Italian Oil Giant Eni Knew About Climate Change More Than 50 Years Ago, Report Reveals111·2 years agoI imagine it would be like owning all the watermelons in the world. Life would be grand until one day you find out there’s a cheaper and more delicious fruit that would grow anywhere there’s is land for it. Sure you could use your watermelon money to convert the entire business over to this new marvel but wouldn’t it just be easier to use your massive funds to suppress and destroy this new dangerous fruit until the world forgets about it? Besides you’ve already invested heavily in watermelons, it would just be bad business sense to let them go to waste. You might as well cash all your stock out before the inevitable collapse in the market for them. One could never keep the truth suppressed for long but might as well make as money as you can before the cat’s out of the bag.

What absolutely gobsmacking value must an unaltered human being possess that tremendous amounts of resources are allocated all over the world to stop people from changing who or what they are?
It’s your body you should be able to choose what to do with it. If in 30 or 40 years we come to find out that it causes irreparable damage and shortened lifespan. It’s earned. If that time until an untimely death is the best life lived then that was well earned too. I’m willing to bet it will be worth it to someone who so desires it. But it should be every individuals choice to do so, and do so freely.
This problem will only continue to compound as medical technology advances. People changing gender identity or their sex is only the tip of the iceberg, given the chance someone out there will try change something about themselves that asks the question of whether or not they are still human. Maybe not in my lifetime but someone born today might have to face such a problem. Based on the lessons we will hand down, well you can plainly see about how that is likely to go down.
We already know who cares so much that people conform to gender norms, are deprived access to reproductive healthcare and autonomy, and also forced to do so in abject poverty. The burning question is why? What ends justify these means?
Seriously, someone make it make sense. What math do I need to learn to be able to understand why you are not able to do as you please with your own life and body? How does anyone else still have a say what is or isn’t in your pants and how is it to their benefit?
It’s an irony then for how much value is placed on genitalia that the rest of the person is only worth at most whatever minimum wage is the standard in your area or occupation.
