You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.
1·6 months agoI was surprised it was that high. I don’t ever drink coffee, so hopefully it offsets some of the meat. We have already reduced our consumption.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Stop Internet Searching and Start Asking on Fediverse?English
3·8 months agoWhich is why I think people on lemmy need to get used to the fact that their data isn’t theirs to own on something that is so public facing like this. Instead we should reteach people to be conscious of what information they post. Once upon a time even A/S/L was too much info.

1·8 months agoWhich is fine, if that’s what the general consensus ends up being (I generally disagree with deleting knowledge, but that’s my own opinion and not up to me really), but then this should/will never be a place for knowledge and only just casual conversation. A lot of people on lemmy want it to replace reddit in terms of search results, but it may never be that.

1·8 months agoDisassociating with old comments and posts would be a good way to go, but I’m not really sure that’s an option for the fediverse? In theory couldn’t someone in the future set up an instance whose sole purpose is just back up and collect data? How would someone even go about trying to erase themselves from a situation like that?

18·8 months agoThere is one worry I have about Lemmy being the knowledge of anything and it’s what happened on reddit. Many people went through and nuked their comments, essentially making many posts useless. There are already people here on lemmy that delete their profiles, comments and start over every few months. Not really sure what that means for all the federation, but I assume different instances may have different versions of deleted information in the long run?

Today I Learned (TIL)@lemmy.ca•TIL I'm not the only person that sees slightly different hues with each eye
9·9 months agoThis is ironically how I discovered I had this. I took off the glasses and took turns looking with one eye closed to see the effect. I randomly did it some time later without the glasses on out of curiosity and noticed there was still a slight color shift. Young me thought it was the 3D colored glasses that damaged my eyes.

4·2 years agoSeems a difficult these days. I saw my niece last year who was in kindergarten at the time, and she was given a tablet by her school where she did all her homework and homework related video games. She’s also recently started learning photoshop and she’s 6 now. The way humans interact with technology will always keep changing. Some bas, some good.

3·2 years agoMostly playing devil’s advocate here (since I don’t think ai should be used commercially), but I’m actually curious about this, since I work in media… You can get away using images or footage for free if it falls under editorial or educational purposes. I know this can vary from place to place, but with a lot of online news sites now charging people to view their content, they could potentially be seen as making money off of copyrighted material, couldn’t they?
ApollosArrow@lemmy.worldtoReddit@lemmy.ml•How many people actually dropped Reddit for Lemmy?
2·2 years agoGiven that I no longer have an app, my google search for “what’s the best for x? Reddit” has gone up. I’m sure many people are still using Reddit for that vs relying on google for the answers.

I know there tends to be a disagreement about this on Lemmy, but this is also what I have observed.
For example, If someone has a computer problem and its windows, there’s a good chance the top comment will be “Stop, use linux”. Almost any conversation can turn into “you’re supporting capitalism”. It discourages people from wanting to post and engage, because of the likely hood of something turning into an argument. Not everyone has the mental bandwidth for it, and they just want a place to come and chill.
Hell I used to be active in making Cassettefuturism grow when lemmee was a thing, and we’d get people coming into that niche community to argue with us about our hobby.
The difference between Reddit and Lemmy was that niche communities would usually not hit the front page and you could be off in your own little corner. Here since things are smaller, you are more likely to run into some niche communities through discovery.
