EU-China summits usually happen in person, with the covid years having been the exception. And the tensions with the US make this one particularly important perhaps.

And they are saying. Further retaliations won’t be through tariffs.
Alsephina@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•China Raises Tariffs on US Goods to 125% in Retaliation, and Says It Won’t Go HigherEnglish201·4 days agoHowever, China warned that it will “resolutely counterattack and fight to the end” if the US continues to infringe on its rights and interests. It also said America should take full responsibility for the damage caused by the tariffs.
So I guess they will retaliate against any further tariffs as usual, but it will be through other means

They might — at least temporarily — decrease prices to sell those goods, and that would naturally mean more importers in the EU and other regions are gonna buy more of them and probably sell at lower prices, driving out local competitors

Wonder how long it’ll take for him to fold on China

I guess that’s the drawback of positioning yourself as an alternative to the US that doesn’t interfere with foreign politics. The USSR was openly funding armed Palestinian resistance like the PFLP.

Alsephina@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•Iran warns Israel, US of ‘severe response’ in case of retaliationEnglish203·1 year agoIran isn’t a credible threat to Israel or the US
This is just false. US war games in the past have shown Iran is fully capable of thwarting a US invasion. And is that really even surprising? Vietnam and Afganistan have done it, and Iran is on a different level.
Iran isn’t the anti-US champion I’m backing
Iran is funding anti-imperialist organizations/governments like Hezbollah, Ansarallah, Hamas, and is a close ally of the Syrian government. They are not socialist like the USSR-backed South Yemen, PFLP etc, but they are anti-imperialist governments that any socialist with “principals” should critically support.
The utopian perfection you desire does not exist in the world right now; by not supporting the actually existing anti-imperialists, you are doing the imperialists’ job for them.
Alsephina@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•US Set to Ring Alarm Bells Over Chinese Industry on World StageEnglish28·1 year agocheap labour
This isn’t really the case anymore with China’s quickly rising wages and rapid automation.
People these days have things built in China no longer for cheap labour but because they have entire supply chains — from the most basic materials to the most advanced products — in the country itself with its manufacturing ability higher than the next 9 countries combined.
That’s the problem the US has: China has not stayed a cheap labour factory (like, say, Africa) and is actually advancing and starting to compete with the US — in some fields already having surpassed them. And this time they can’t sabotage their economy like they did to Japan with the Plaza Accords.
Perks of having a socialist state.
Alsephina@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•Biden vows G7 response, ‘ironclad’ US support for Israel after Iran attacksEnglish18·1 year agoSettler colonialism has nothing to do with religion.
Palestine is merely good place for a colony since it’s a bridge between Asia and Africa; israel’s formation used common british colonization tactics [III], with companies literally named “Colonization Commission”, “Jewish Colonial Trust” and the like.
Theodor Herzl, the founder of “zionism” was a racist who saw it as a rampart of the west in the region.
“We should there form a portion of a rampart of Europe against Asia, an outpost of civilization as opposed to barbarism. We should as a neutral State remain in contact with all Europe, which would have to guarantee our existence.” Source [II]
Only difference now is that the US has been the de facto leader of the imperial core since WW2, no longer UK in Europe. They are thus now israel’s main supporter.

Alsephina@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•Biden vows G7 response, ‘ironclad’ US support for Israel after Iran attacksEnglish236·1 year agoThe current problems in the DPRK stem from the brutal sanctions. Prior to the USSR’s overthrow when the sanctions had far less effect, the North was developing and urbanizing faster than the South, even with 20% of its population killed, and all its infrastructure destroyed, by the US.

Agree with you on the nukes of course. The DPRK would’ve ended up like Libya is right now and the US might have been at war against China if they didn’t develop their nuclear deterrence.

Alsephina@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Young Hong Kongers who defied Xi are now partying in ChinaEnglish18·1 year agoHong Kong’s democracy
Lmao, bourgeois “democracy” is only a democracy for capitalists. Real democracy like that of mainland China actually serves the people by improving their lives, lifting them from poverty, building infrastructure and making goods more affordable for workers, as you can see in this article.
Alsephina@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Saying what can't be said: Israel has been defeated – a total defeatEnglish1·1 year agoYou might want to fix the misspelling in “ethnically”
Alsephina@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.ml•Saying what can't be said: Israel has been defeated – a total defeatEnglish132·1 year agoAll Palestinian violence against the occupation is justified resistance, not “terrorism”
Hamas’s tactics (attacking villages, taking hostages, using tunnels and guerilla warfare) and goals (driving out an occupying force and reuniting their country) are no different from other revolutionary armed organizations like the Viet Cong’s.
Decolonization is violent; best way to avoid it is to not colonize in the first place.
And anyway, Hamas has done a far better job avoiding killing civilians than the occupying force with military superiority and far more precise equipment has. The final death toll from the Oct 7 retaliation is now thought to be 695 Israeli “civilians” (mostly unarmed IDF conscripts), 373 armed IDF members, 71 foreigners and 36 children. While Israel has killed over 30 thousand Palestinians, 2/3 of whom are women and children.
They’re now saying these electronics will be tariffed separately lol. They’re just doing blatant insider trading
