Roll charts are very similar to this and still get used today for some motorcycle rallies.
I’ve seen that before and it’s just charming, but it doesn’t seem all that useful. More of a novelty. The effort it would take would be more than the effort of just using a regular map.
Seems like it would be easier to just hang on to the tiny maps without the watch.
