I know social media has been around for a bit now. But as technology progresses, you begin to wonder how far facial recognition and things like that will go. Especially if you are a parent.
I will always say, you should never post your child’s photos online.

Why is it always about protecting the kids from technology?

I’m way more concerned about the future of the elderly having technology than the children.

Old people out of touch with technology are dangerous. In 20 years that’ll be you and me and we are going to lose touch and we are going to do dangerous shit. How do we stop ourselves from doing that?

When the kids today get old, they will become more in touch with the technology. Because, kids grow up with it now. As they get older they will have some knowledge of it. The old people now grew up with things like typewriters. Not iPads and fast computers with the kids today. Unless the technology is so insane that they cannot comprehend it. The kids today will adapt. And I was more concerned about the online bullying from strangers and creeps finding your kid’s photos online.

Current old people grew up with the technology of their time: cars and television. Yet they’re the worst drivers and watch televised propaganda all day long.

If we want to save the children from social media, we first need to accept that it’s a problem for everybody, not just kids, since we also can’t handle it safely by ourselves and especially not when we get older.

Social Media is somewhat like the discovery of birth control pills. At first it opened for some freedom, but Social Media is now in the AIDS phase. I don’t think it is possible to make a fool proof legal restriction for neither kids or old people, but we can teach and encourage a cultural change for safe practices.

Their old cars and nob televisions are nothing compared to the new tech of today that kids use. That is why I say the kids today will adapt and it won’t be a problem when they get older. But, it will all be robots in charge probably anyway, if you are talking about further on.

            “what’s a computer”

Most of these ipad kids are just as illiterate as old people who don’t understand how to switch apps on an ipad. Knowing how to use Snapchat isn’t a skill, they don’t know how how to mount a drive, they are just as susceptible to propaganda and tomorrow’s advanced technology won’t just make sense to them when they’re older.

Well yea, technically anything that computes is a computer. But the children today are still forced to use fast computer desktops/laptops at school that the old people didn’t when they were growing up. I am talking about basic tasks that an 80 year old can’t figure out to do today that a 5 year old can figure out on a device. And yes, I’ve asked the teachers. A lot of kids can’t even read at an alarming older age. And don’t get me started on evil snapchat.

I was referencing the ipad commercial where the kids say “what’s a computer?”

Kids today don’t understand the technology any more than kids yesterday understood early computers or kids before that understood early electronics, being able to use a technology product as intended doesn’t mean much, as they get older they’ll stop adopting the latest and greatest that the kids are into “these days” and will get out of touch and be left behind.

A subset of old people will still understand the newest technology as they do today, because that’s what they’re into, not because they simply grew up with it.

If anything, it’s much worse today. When I was a kid we opened our computers and repaired them, kids today just ask their parents to get them a new iPad.

Again a child knowing how to open Snapchat and playing with filters, knowing how to use TikTok and the current hip lingo, knowing how to install apps from an app store, knowing how to use products as intended is meaningless. You’re grandfather likely understood how to use the technology of his youth, and he struggles with today’s technology.

If you don’t understand the underlying technology of today, you’ll struggle with the presentation options of tomorrow when you’re old.

You don’t have to know how to repair a computer, that’s not my point. Understanding how to repair is understanding how it works, understanding that it’s a computer, understanding the role of storage and memory, understanding how the technology works and not just how to navigate today’s UI shipped by the company that made a particular product.

Growing up with AI without understanding how it works isn’t a valuable skill, on the contrary, it prevents acquiring critical thinking skills.
