I was curious after I looked into this prop. Unlike the SAVE act, which would disenfranchise a lot of people, Prop 39 would require the state to give voter ID cards to everyone who requests one which resolves a big issue.

It sounds mostly good to me now, as it could somewhat strengthen confidence in elections, and many countries have a similar requirement. The only issues I can think of are:

  • This isn’t really necessary, and is basically just a random hurdle
  • Somewhat expensive, for no major reason The biggest thing is
  • bending the knee to trump

Is there something I’m missing?

Exactly. And asking for one requires time and energy the people without resources are unlikely to have. Everyone should be registered and provided with the means to vote by default.

If you need an ID to vote, all I need to do to keep you from voting is to steal your ID.

Think your wife might vote blue? “Accidentally” take her purse in your car. Think your teenager might buy in to that new “woke” fashion? Their ID gets locked up “to keep it from being lost”.

If someone is in an abusive situation where confiscating an ID is a thing, the phone, car key or anything else would also be possible to lock up. I dont really see how ID is meaningfully different.

    • The only material thing it seems to do is create a new private cause of action that would allow anyone to challenge voter rolls. What does that look like in practice? The proposition text is silent on that.

    • It says the government shall use “best efforts” to verify citizenship using various records and databases. That’s an unreasonably low standard and an unreasonably vague process.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I voted no, for all the reasons. Until there is credible election issues, why would anyone need to strengthen confidence in elections? People who believe there is widespread election fraud aren’t tapped into reality anyway.
