Technology@lemmy.world•The first true MacBook Neo rivals are here, packing double the RAM and storage of Apple's budget laptopEnglish
10·18 days agoAt least the OS can be swapped. If the battery life is abysmal compared to the Neo for similar specs then there’s no redemption possible.
The only way I’d favor this over a Neo is similar battery life and user-replaceable RAM (ideally LPCAMM2).

Technology@lemmy.world•Plex Announces Massive Price Hike on Lifetime Subscription PlansEnglish
15·18 days agoYeah Lifetime Passes are unsustainable for a service. The only reason they exist is to attract some early adopters, keep them and if lucky enough have them bring more customers.
The only viable path forward is to discontinue the purchase of new lifetime licenses, or make them exponentially expensive.

3·20 days agoThe more time goes by, the more I’m interested about software and hardware that tries to do more with less at the consumer and enthusiast level.
Ex: ESP-based projects and products, Meshtastic/MeshCore, eInk-based displays for lower energy consumption, etc

Can we try cutting down on computing resources wherever possible first?

Canada@lemmy.ca•Signal to Ottawa: We'll Leave Canada Before We Help You Spy on Users
12·21 days agoSeems like a huge risk. You either lose a part of your userbase by leaving the country, or you risk losing your reputation internationally if it’s discovered that you are complicit in spying, and reputation is everything in the world of encrypted messaging.

Age-verification and age-estimation methods
(2) Before prescribing any age-verification or age-estimation method under paragraph (1)(b), the Governor in Council must ensure that the method
(a) is highly effective;they’ll bullshit their way through that one, no way you can make that “highly effective”. It’s all political posturing with the “protect our children” pretext, with the goal of eroding privacy without accomplishing the initial goal whatsoever.

So far nothing conclusive at the software and hardware level, we think it may have been a temporary network connectivity issue at the datacenter level, as it didn’t just affect one service.
