  • I haven’t kept up with things, but that has to be like bicycle level light and lab conditions. I remember people talking about bicycling with solar and the required area was the size of a pickup truck just to power a basic hundred pound-ish touring kit, and even then it was only pedal assist on a cloudy day or hills. That was only 10-13 years ago. The main issue is that panels are not in any way optimally directional in practice. I expect 40 miles is down hill from the continental divide on I40, after parking the thing in the beam of a solar molten salt energy storage array for a day, during peak solar storm activity, but the fuck if I know bugger all. I know Dave did the math about one of the cars back when he was looking at various EVs. IIRC, no solar panels are more than 30% efficient, most are around 20-25% under optimal conditions. Then you half that or more when they are not directional. That gives a best case baseline for the energy they can produce based upon the sun’s output. I know panels have been improving, but we are well past any large scale optimizations and into the phase of scaling production to reduce cost. Do you know what they claim to have changed?

  • The amount of power from built in panels is negligible relative to the battery. Solar panels are not vinyl film. They are actual semiconductors. They can be thin but are fragile. One can design a panel into some form of shape, but that is not a small task and is only possible with economy of scale for the tooling. Ultra thin solar panels have no real durability.

I am a pro automotive painter and have owned my own shop twice. I would not want this. Just reproduction body work is expensive. The custom stuff is even more. To make it into frivolous tech, that would cost orders of magnitude more, and the market to make it is so insignificant it would be a massive vanity project and loss. Then it is a nightmare when cars start burning from a few chips to the hood or roof on the highway because someone did not account for the short circuit potential in software and management circuitry. The total power of an optimal solar panel of equivalent size is irrelevant to the scale of an EV battery. Dave on the EEVBlog YT channel has covered this in years past with cars. Use the EEVBlog forum to search and learn more. That is the goto place for EEs.

  • Obviously, all the junk noncoding DNA most life is carrying around likely includes some coping mechanisms for whatever potential situations arise. Like there is the one town in Iran with something like ten times Earth’s nominal background radiation and people are fine living there.

Makes me a bit concerned when this kind of thing is talked about and researched. Probably my cynicism, but if it gets out that most species have some genetic tolerance in a significant portion of the population, the potential for nuclear weapons use increases dramatically. I believe it is likely that early life had a lot more exposure to radiation, so early ancestors likely evolved the machinery. When the vast majority of DNA is noncoding, I think the probability is high. We come at the medical issue backwards, playing wack-a-mole with symptoms, rather than building a full ontological understanding of biology. That level is still centuries away. Hopefully we are less primitive murder orgy fans by then. We survived the world war of chemicals, and physics that followed. If we survive the world war of computer science, the world war of biology will be the brutal final boss for the starting planetary level of Evo’ Universe. Who bets we can beat the game on one evo life?

  • Nah, I don’t think these are at all related to the other scissors style. I think these likely have an entire internal assembly mechanism. There is enough space in the thickness around the adjuster on that side of the forged body.

Actually, in the entire post here, no one seems to have understood the real issue at play. I explained it rather poorly. The flatness issue is the shoulder under the head of the bolt in parallel with the under side of the but. There must be clearance for the nut thread, which will always allow the nut face to tilt out of parallel. Scissors generally seem to obfuscate this problem with the curvature of the blades.

I think there is some extra small trick in the mix. The location of final thread helix contact when/where the nut is tightened to seems important. This seems to set the initial shearing location along the length of the blade. If done incorrectly, the scissors may work well from some arbitrary point along the length, but not from the start of the shearing blade. Bending the blade does not change the behavior, and neither do washers or lock washers. However, a steel rivet does not have this issue even when it gets a little loose from wear. Any general purpose screw and nut has this issue. I have a large selection of hardware at home for use in 3d printing design, like I have a better selection of M2-M8 than any hardware store around.

I’m not sure how all the different designs are decoupling the thread clearance and helix issue, or if they are moving it to some indexed location. I was half hoping that someone would see the post and chime in about it being some common design topology because it is such an ubiquitous tool.

  • The professional hair stylist’s scissors have the most wild variation. The tension is adjustable using the little tool spanner against the cross dimples. The wild part is that there are detents to how it tightens and does not feel at all linear. The detents are counted and each feels the same. The mechanism feels strange, like something one might expect in a pocket watch, not scissors.

I see little real value in diagnosis or doctors in general. That stems from my personal harsh reality of experiencing first hand the real limits and incompetency of current medicine. Go start having serious spinal issues that are not strait forward, and you will watch the house of cards fall apart.

Ultimately, none of us are like flags in the register if a computer; some binary state. We are all a spectrum. That applies to all things in life. You may be shifted strongly in one direction or another, but most of us fall somewhere close to the median.

I think a lot of people fail to understand that we all have the tendencies and mechanisms present for all disorders, baring schizophrenia. Labeling anything a disorder only means that whatever behavior is causing you distress and harm in a meaningful way. Just by asking if you have this issue is itself an admission of distress and you altered your day to go to the doctor, so you’ve already had it technically qualify as a disorder.

IMO, where possible, take the meds and see if it helps you in some tangible way. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t. What I’m saying is the threshold for disorder is ridiculously blurry and rather meaningless. When stigmatized, it is outright harmful. For me it is largely a choice and a comfort zone. Maybe that is just my bias. I do not test as autistic. Even as a kid, I had the Machiavellian awareness to become whatever I wanted and bend a test to my desired outcome.

Woke up today thinking I have all the skills to make and fix e-bikes and that is likely a good leverage point to start to escape my isolation and push myself incrementally.

I was feeling really good after like 3 weeks of being able to push myself hard with new meds. Then the ideas of wtf I am going to do with myself were overwhelming. Like a person can’t bottle helpless isolation for 11+ years and then just flip that switch like I’m fine now.

So yeah, a few dark days hit me. Waking up to the idea of messing with e-bikes was a win. I just need to finish my hot air rework station and set up my bedroom electronics lab properly again.

I don’t really lock in though. All my best ideas and epiphanies happen at random when I’m doing other stuff. If feels like a dozen unrelated threads are always running in the back of my head and one or two might be closer to the front. When I try to force the timeline or creativity, I usually run in circles and get nowhere. Give me a few days to mull something over and I will distil the issues unlike anyone else. I think I’m just really dumb because I don’t understand things like most people. Like I do see the logic and can go through the motions, but all most people appear to do is memorize bits and pieces of information. I want to fundamentally understand the subject at a useful and flexible level. I don’t value theory like I do applications. I can still do theory, but only when I ground it in a useful application. I place no value on memorization independent of application. I cannot keep those things in long term memory for very long. Six months later, I forget it all. My lock is that I mull over stuff in the background for weeks at a time like I’m always working on them in bits and pieces of thought. Still to this day I question even saying that out loud. Like it seems so basal that everyone should be doing the same. It is fundamental to me. The older I get the more I question that assumption.

  • The ability to filter information using proprietary devices and software in the kernel of all of these garbage devices is the core issue. Trusting the owners of that code is to surrender your right to unbiased and unfiltered information. I am not at all concerned about hacking or security by small insignificant players. I am massively concerned about the extremely powerful using the leverage they have normalized and embedded to become tyrannical neo feudal lords in a fascist society. Google IS the biggest danger by orders upon orders of magnitude. Trusting them is to give up democracy entirely.

All mobile devices are proprietary. Android is a scheme to make a Linux kernel that has everything ready to deploy except the actual hardware drivers for the processor and modem. Manufacturers take this kernel and add their proprietary binaries at the last possible moment. That source code is not available anywhere. The hardware documentation is not available anywhere publicly. Every device model is just different enough that reverse engineering one does nothing transferable to any other. The level of reverse engineering is extreme and requires destroying many devices using things like fuming nitric acid and fluorine solutions just to have a small chance at reading some parts of embedded memory. These are some of the most dangerous and hazardous chemicals humans make, and you still need xray equipment, special microscopes with stepping automation to stitch images, and a ton of time.

This is moving to a tyrannical surveillance state of fascist authoritarianism. Open source software is a major front on the line of real democracy. This is a nuclear bomb released on that democracy. You fear the wrong pirates and criminals. The biggest threats always come from within. Trust as a mechanism is fundamentally antithetical to democracy. Everyone demanding trust is a traitor to democracy. Trust is the key of the fascist kingdom. Once that key is held, democracy has failed regardless of whomever is aware of the situation. Democracy requires fully informed citizens with skepticism and the liberal right to decide for themselves even when they are wrong. This is impossible without full access to information. The source of that information cannot be filtered at any level. We already have the narrowest bottleneck of available information sources in the last 1000 years of history. There are only 2 relevant web crawlers. All search queries filter through one or both of these two and the results from these are not deterministic. Two people searching for the same thing at the same time will get very different and very biased results. This is individualized regardless of any protections people imagine they have in place. Outside of the internet there is no real unbiased media. A dozen people own it all. Even the garbage claiming to comb all sources is drawing the line and dictating what is center right or left is. Anyone at the grassroots level is impossible to find because there are no organic unbiased search results. The results are all filtered junk full of agenda and bias.

This is the real big picture abstract issue in play. When the maga traitors said this was a coup, they absolutely ment that. Mobile devices are all rental garbage someone else controls. Your computer likewise has a secret operating system running in the background that you do not control. In Intel it is called the Intel Management Engines or ME. This started with Intel VPro in 2008. AMD adopted it is 2013. Arm has one too.

All that is left is to steal your right to have a digital front door by eliminating DNS filtering and all of these devices will be controlled and connected directly by someone else that is watching and listening at all times. You are already in tethers as a digital slave that can be bought and sold for exploitation and manipulation without your consent or knowledge using your digital presence. You have not effectively realized the implications of that surrendering of rights to citizenship with full autonomy. The next step is to redefine the word citizen to be functionally equivalent to slave. “You will own nothing, and you will be happy about it” because if you are not, you will be dead. This is the death of democracy. My words will echo in your head years from now. The dystopia to come is beyond anything you can presently imagine and there is no way to stop it now short of taking up arms and playing Luigi if you are able.

The consolidation of wealth is what really made Caesar. That was the death of the republic. It was not Caesar. We are all a product of our time and environment. It was the consolidation of great wealth. All that wealth did not give a shit about Rome, it went to Constantinople for better opportunities at first chance because consolidation of wealth is treasonous. It is as it was, just look at outsourcing and off shoring, or the disgusting mismanagement of banking and housing that have made the American worker completely uncompetitive with Asian counterparts at the same standard of living. No, I have no fear of the boogie man or foreign state actors. I am terrified of the criminal that normalizes domestic trust, actively manipulates and exploits me, and steals my purchased property. That is a real monster.
