132·24 days ago“This technology turns every router into a potential means for surveillance,” warns Julian Todt from KASTEL. “If you regularly pass by a café that operates a WiFi network, you could be identified there without noticing it and be recognized later – for example by public authorities or companies.”

Inexpensive or older routers either don’t store history at all or keep it for a short time.
Newer models can store more information for more extended periods.

Science@lemmy.ml•'Negative Time' Really Does Exist, New Experiments SuggestEnglish
12·1 month agohttps://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/gjfq-k9dv
Abstract
When a photon traverses a cloud of atoms without scattering, how much time does it spend as an atomic excitation? To address this question, we used the cross-Kerr effect to weakly probe the degree of atomic excitation caused by a transmitted resonant “signal” photon by measuring the phase shift induced on a (separate, off-resonant) “probe” beam, postselected on cases when the signal photon is transmitted. The time integral of this observed phase shift, properly normalized and averaged over many runs in which the photon is detected after transmission, is the excitation time of interest, in a weak-valued sense. We measured mean atomic excitation times ranging from (−0.82±0.31)𝜏0 for the most narrow band pulse to (0.54±0.28)𝜏0 for the most broadband signal pulse, where 𝜏0 is the non-post-selected excitation time, given by the scattering probability multiplied by the atomic lifetime 𝜏sp . Across a range of pulse durations and optical depths, our results are consistent with the recent theoretical prediction that the weak value of the atomic excitation time caused by a transmitted photon equals the group delay experienced by the light. Our experimental results show that negative times are not limited to describing the shift in the peak of a reshaped wave packet (as resulting from group delay), but they also provide the appropriate description of the weak-valued time the photon spends as an atomic excitation.
Atomic excitation refers to the process where an electron in an atom absorbs energy and moves to a higher energy level or orbit.

Technology@lemmy.zip•First Apple M5 memory exploit discovered using Anthropic AI, gives root access on MacOSEnglish
19·1 month agoThere aren’t many technical details, but the vulnerability is simple in practice: run a command as a standard user and gain root (administrator) access to the machine. Macs are rarely servers, so the practical impact is limited. However, the exploit remains concerning, as it’s relatively easy to trick a user into running it and, with full system control, also hard to find and remove.
“the practical impact is limited.” but if it’s your Mac…

Technology@lemmy.zip•The First Modern Car Without Hydraulic Brakes Is Headed to ProductionEnglish
7·1 month agoBrembo’s new “Sensify” braking system takes that one step further, eliminating the hydraulic system entirely and relying instead purely on electronic brake-by-wire and electric motors. Brembo is positioning its system as a plug-and-play solution that can be integrated at both the platform level (as part of a dedicated zonal architecture) or as part of an existing ecosystem, perhaps as part of a supplemental ADAS package.
“Designed as a scalable and adaptable solution, Sensify is engineered to support a wide range of advanced vehicle architectures, from next-generation driver assistance systems to fully autonomous applications, marking a key milestone in the evolution of braking toward a truly software-defined future,” Brembo said in its announcement.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•The Small Website Discoverability CrisisEnglish
19·2 months agoThis is a serious problem for the Internet. While there are sites like https://512kb.club/ (it features lightweight websites with content), but there’s not an easy way to learn about new or niche sites.
According to https://growthbadger.com/traffic-study/ from April 5, 2020 (yes, it’s 6 years old)
What 3.25 Billion Website Visits Tell Us About the Internet’s Top Traffic Sources
- Search is the single largest online traffic source, driving well over 50% of most industries’ web traffic.
- Google drives 8 times more traffic than all social media networks combined.
- The average top blog gets 66.47% of its traffic from search, of which 99.77% is organic and only 0.23% is paid.
- In almost every industry, Facebook still sends more traffic than all other social networks. The two exceptions are Design and Development (for which the top network is YouTube) and Crypto (for which it is Twitter).
- The niche that is most reliant on Google is Health and Medical, with 87.85% of its traffic coming from search.
- The niche that is least reliant on Google is Crypto, with 45.74% of its traffic coming from search.
- Facebook delivers 65.36% of all social media traffic: more visits per month than all other social networks combined.
- Instagram drives very little traffic: under 1% overall across all niches. Even fashion and beauty brands that were launched by Instagram influencers (e.g. Kylie Cosmetics) receive less than 5% of their monthly visits from Instagram — while search brings in about 10 times as many.
- The niche that is most reliant on Facebook is Business and Marketing, which gets 13.52% of its traffic from the network.
- Reddit drives over 3 times as much traffic to blogs as YouTube.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Quebec judge orders former SNC-Lavalin exec back to prison for 10 yearsEnglish
16·2 months agoSo apparently he pocked about 26 million according to this article from Dec 09, 2019:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/sami-bebawi-snc-lavalin-1.5383469
The prosecution is trying to prove SNC-Lavalin transferred about $113 million to shell companies used to pay people who helped the company collect money and secure contracts in Libya, beginning in the late 1990s.
What remained in the accounts after the kickbacks were paid was split between Bebawi and Riadh Ben Aissa, a former colleague, the Crown alleges, with Bebawi pocketing $26 million.
So even if he spent some of it, he should have considerably more than $100K.

Whoa! A Whole 80 days?
Well, you can’t say a former governor got off easy. Those 70 days will be pure hell.
I mean imagine how she’ll feel serving that long 60-day sentence.
She could get out for good behavior, maybe after half of that 50-day sentence.
Of course, the judge might make her serve that whole month so that she can set an example.
That week will probably make her regret what she did.
That’ll probably be the longest weekend of her life.
