Technology@lemmy.world•Next-gen optical disk can store over 14,000 4k movies
9·2 years agoThis 1000 years thing is how (at least on paper) the main components of the medium can chemically stay intact and bonded together. You want this as stable as possible since more stability means more resistance to outside forces like moisture and such. Most discs suffering from disc rot today had a number between 5 years (baaaaad) and 200 years (still not great) and are decaying now.
So don’t take things like this too literally.
If you’re a thechbro, this is the new magic shit, man! To the moooooon!

14·2 years agoWell, the line between a minimal overhead, self employed lifestyle and an abusive workplace are fuzzy in those kinds of arrangements

13·2 years agoWhile I love that they are profitable, this sounds like a massive private investment from all involved which is not a good model as a whole

Technology@beehaw.org•Gen Z is bringing back landline phones because they think they look ‘cool’: ‘I love to twirl the cord’
2·2 years agoYou wanted to say that some gen Zers buy novelty Bluetooth headphones that look like a phone with a cord on it, right? Also: who still had a cord in the 2000’s besides super important business ppl?

Technology@beehaw.org•Apple’s iMessage is not a “core platform” in EU, so it can stay walled off
1·2 years agoWhat tone? I was pulling your leg a little, as in “haha u old”, no sarcasm intended.
Regarding the sources: I just did a quick google and here is the most trustworthy source of business insider: https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-iphone-ownership-creates-culture-of-multitasking-2019-6
that aside, one of the connections I have to the US has kids and her kids actually experienced some isolation because the kids only had “cheap android” and thus couldn’t use iMessages which was what all the other kids pointedly used because teenagers are suckers for made up common identity bullshit. It was that one specific brand of baggies when I was young, now iit seems to be iPhones in some places.

3·2 years agoWell, if you don’t know that, it means that either, you are not a US citizen, which we ruled out, ooooor… oooh, I hate to break it to you but… you have lost touch with “the youngsters” as they say. You are old.

Technology@beehaw.org•Apple’s iMessage is not a “core platform” in EU, so it can stay walled off
1·2 years agoIt’s not bad for apple, but iMessage is so irrelevant here in Germany, even the most die hard Apple fans will use WhatsApp no matter what.

2·2 years agoDude, you tried to lead OP off on a weird tangent that
a) they didn’t follow you on and
b) was nonsense and lacked understanding on your part from the get go.Stop insulting people as being stupid when clearly you didn’t (want to) understand what was said and just tried to tell people who told personal anecdotes that their anecdotes are wrong…
To.be fair, there are threads though. That one is on the users.

New Communities@lemmy.world•HailCorporate: Call Out Corporate Astroturfing on Lemmy
123·2 years agoThat people call me a shill for recommending the stuff from the company I work for which I only recommend because
A) I know it so I can help them with their problems and
b) I got it cheaper, so I tried it and I know that it’s alrightBut people will first ask me “because I work at a Telco” and then not believe me because “of course you’d say that, you work at a Telco”.
I was adding a personal anecdote to the argument you made that people calling out “shills” often depends on if they share your opinion or not.

Can we talk less about AI inevitably doing what AI always dies and fuck up and instead talk about the website that uses AI resources to dangle an even more juicy carrot in front of desperate people throwing away their money with the lottery?
