Woodworking@lemmy.ca•Whittled this guy from Johnny Layton on YouTube
4·10 months agoIt really is. Whittling is great bc it’s the one kind of woodworking you can do without your shop. Sitting around a fire or even inside on a rainy day

Woodworking@lemmy.ca•I heard we are doing walnut credenzas now. Made this one for my brother for Christmas.
3·2 years agoBeautiful work!very nice design too. Is the carcass all miter joints? That’s great skill. Did you glue them? Is there dowels or biscuits or anything holding them together?
The one I did is just glue on the miters but I wish I had the skills and tools to reinforce them
Wow that looks way better than the junk I made! How is it assembled? Glue? Screws?
Amazing work! You made that whoever thing yourself? What an accomplishment!
I’m interested in making doors. How is it built?

Woodworking@lemmy.ca•Walnut credenza! It took me all winter to build. I’m so proud of it!
4·2 years agoYes exactly! I haven’t worked much with solid hardwoods but I have promised myself that my next piece will be. I got a second hand planer. And I’m ready, I want to make a pair of nightstands inspired by the couch in Wharton Esherick’s house

6·2 years agoYes I got some high-quality walnut plywood and some solid walnut too. My finish is 3 coats of wipe-on poly cut with a little mineral spirits, then 3-4 coats of paste wax. Extra wax on top.

15·2 years agoYou’re too kind! IDK if I can share plans- I designed it in Sketchup. Yes for sure I used a table saw, circular saw, scroll saw- so many saws!
It is mostly walnut plywood, but there is solid walnut on the doors, the molding, and the feet. I spent $600 on all the supplies including drawer slides and hinges.

Woodworking@lemmy.ca•Would hickory be good for making handles for files?
8·2 years agoI think you have it right. Hickory is a strong wood that will make a great handle. It can also flex well. Maple would be prettier but whatever you have you should use. Once you make a good shape and have a matching set it’s going to be a crowd pleaser whichever way you go.
I don’t think it’s a question of which would hold up better. Both will do great and be long lasting. I would do maple instead though. Sure the hickory is cheap but a small amount of maple for handles won’t be much either and you’re making something to last forever.
Post pics when they’re done!

Woodworking@lemmy.ca•[Answered]Is there a wood hard enough to regularly scrape aluminum?
8·2 years agoYes almost any wood is harder than pine. Old furniture tends to be a lot of oak, at least in my country. Here’s what I would do: find any piece of hardwood. You can use furniture but you will probably find it easier to get a small branch off a hardwood tree. Any tree that has leaves instead of needles will be hardwood ( Some wood nerds would object). Whittle a few skewers out of the wood but NOT the pith- Not the dead center of the branch. After it’s whittled it will be dry within a day even if it’s green still. Then I would hold it over a fire/ stove a bit. Don’t burn it, but the heat will toughen the fibers. That’s probably the best bet.
Sorry about your nice post getting vandalized by that shmuck. They’re banned now.
Oh MY!!! it’s like $500!!! wow. That must be a very nice fence indeed. Mine is the one that came with my Rigid saw and it’s not great. Also the miter guage fell apart. Shoot. I need some upgrades.
