That can be difficult enough to evaluate in the moment that I’m more willing to forgive it if the namesake is dead, and while I woukd prefer such names be changed that can be an even greater ordeal.

I will also forgive a place getting named after a living person if they funded it themselves, not the least because that seems like a good incentive to get rich people to fund infrastructure.

I think it’s more acceptable to do it for someone who’s already dead, not the least because that means it can’t be an effort to stroke their ego in an attempt to curry favor.

I’m inclined to think he’s going to get away with it, but more because of the circumstances under which he provided the password, as in prolonged detention where he was specifically denied access to a lawyer.

While not illegal to propose such a law, that would be a bill of attainder, and thus unconstitutional under article 1, section 9, clause 3.

Never done it myself, so I don’t know for sure, but being able to do something like that was part of what I assumed was possible.

Re: backups, I think a large part of the idea is that users are theoretically able to back up and migrate their own data at will.

I prefer that to there being some requirement that you provide identification to access the audit logs. Actually, what I would really prefer would be for there to be no need for audit logs in the first place, if there were no system to be audited.

Believe it or not, most of the US has the age of consent below 18, even before factoring in Romeo and Juliette laws. I’m sure there are some restrictions on making use of that information, use of sex toys being banned being one of them if I recall and making porn being banned until 18 regardless, but 18 is hardly a universal thing even here.

Might I suggest trying to update the app, both the pre-patched one and the patches applied.

It’s also been forcing login to access new reddit, so as far as I can tell the site is just completely unusable for anyone without an account.

I would assume they aren’t bothering to scan it if it’s in the public domain. Much easier to just grab a copy off archive.org or any other website hosting such things, and that’s assuming the entirety of the public domain isn’t already in the training set.

IIRC destruction of the physical copy to prevent resale while still possessing a copy is required for book scanning to be free use, or otherwise not encounter problems with copyright law. Proceeding to share/distribute those scans, or especially trying to charge money for them, would encounter those exact same copyright barriers.

While that would be nice, unfortunately it would almost certainly run into the very same legal issues that are also causing them to pulp the books after scanning them.

I was also prompted to log into the new reddit earlier today (as in full blocking login popup of the kind you see with news paywalls), so even that is off the table.

It takes more than minutes, especially with an OS that doesn’t have a back door built into it. Also that’s a forensic tool, IIRC those require a warrant to use.

Since they just let him walk after the phone wiped itself, they clearly didn’t actually believe he was a risk of any kind. If there was any actual reason for suspicion they would/should have detained him outright.
